Nigeria’s Athletics Team Prepares for 2025 Islamic Solidarity Games
Nigeria’s athletics team is making final preparations for the 2025 Islamic Solidarity Games in Saudi Arabia, despite the absence of some of its top athletes. The country’s head coach, Solomon Aliyu, remains confident in the potential of the young squad to deliver strong performances.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has confirmed that 17 athletes will represent the nation in athletics at the event, down from an initial list of 25. This reduction was due to availability, not disciplinary action, according to an AFN official. Some high-profile athletes, including Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, Africa’s shot put record holder, and Divine Oladipo, have withdrawn for personal reasons.
Enekwechi reportedly stepped down due to his wedding plans in the United States, while Oladipo cited personal reasons for his withdrawal. Despite these absences, Coach Aliyu believes the team is well-prepared and capable of competing with strong teams from countries such as Bahrain, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar.
“We’re preparing the next generation of athletes to take responsibility and make their mark. Many of them are already showing great promise both locally and internationally,” Aliyu said. He emphasized that athletics is a sport defined by measurable performance and that the Nigerian team is determined and focused.

The event brings together top athletes from across the Islamic world, offering a platform for competition and cultural exchange.
Nigeria aims to surpass its previous performance at the Games, where it won four medals—three silver and one bronze—in athletics during the 2017 edition. This time, the focus is on building on that success and showcasing the depth of talent within the country’s athletic community.
Looking Ahead
Coach Aliyu expressed optimism about the team’s ability to compete at a high level. “Our athletes are determined and focused, and I believe they can match or even surpass the best from other nations,” he said. With a strong support system and a clear plan, the Nigerian team is ready to make its mark at the 2025 Islamic Solidarity Games.
