Community in Shock After Violent Attack in Kogi State

A violent attack has shaken the Ibado-Akpacha community in Akpacha ward of Ife district, Omala local government area of Kogi State. According to reports, two individuals were killed by unidentified gunmen who stormed the village between last Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. One of the victims managed to survive with bullet wounds, while the other two lost their lives.

The attack was described as chaotic and terrifying by local residents. A community leader, who wished to remain anonymous, shared the harrowing experience. “We were all stuck on our beds, unsure whether to run out of the house or stay and pray for divine protection,” he said. “We only came out this morning when we were sure the gunmen had left. We then headed towards the direction of the gunshots to discover the victims.”

The attackers reportedly carried out a robbery operation, breaking into homes and collecting money, as well as looting shops at a junction in the village. They took consumables and various goods before fleeing the scene.

According to the community leader, the criminals operated for nearly an hour and escaped without any response from the police or local security personnel. “They had superior weapons, and confronting them would have led to a major disaster and heavy casualties,” he added.

Police Confirm the Incident

On Thursday, the Kogi State Police Command confirmed the incident, describing it as a case of armed robbery and homicide. The Public Relations Officer (PPRO), William Ovye Aya (CSP), stated that the hoodlums invaded a house, robbed it, and shot two people. He noted that the victims were taken to the hospital, where they were confirmed dead.

Aya also revealed that the attackers went to another house and robbed a person of some money. From there, they proceeded to the shop of a businessman named Abubakar Yusuf. According to the PPRO, they stole 20 Android phones and 200 button phones. One individual escaped with bullet wounds.

Ongoing Investigation

The police have launched an investigation into the incident, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of investigations. Aya emphasized that members of the public are cooperating by providing information to help identify and arrest the perpetrators.

This incident has left the community in shock and fear. Residents are calling for increased security and better law enforcement presence to prevent such attacks from happening again.

The attack has raised concerns about the safety of the community, especially since the police and local security forces did not respond promptly. Many residents feel vulnerable and are questioning the effectiveness of current security measures.
