Introduction to the Student Parliament of Seevali Central College

On November 6, Sri Lanka witnessed a significant event as the inaugural session of the Student Parliament of Seevali Central College in Ratnapura was held at the Old Parliament Chamber of the Presidential Secretariat. This event marked an important milestone in the Vision programme series, which is designed to engage and educate schoolchildren through collaborative efforts between the Presidential Secretariat, the Education Ministry, and the Communication Department of Parliament.

Key Activities During the Programme

The programme focused on several essential topics that are crucial for the development of young leaders. Students were educated on future leadership, the history of parliamentary traditions, the role of Parliament, and the current functions of the President’s Fund. These discussions aimed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the political landscape and their potential roles within it.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake attended the event, where he engaged in a cordial discussion with the students and teachers present. His presence highlighted the importance of youth involvement in the democratic process and underscored the government’s commitment to nurturing future leaders.

Ceremonial Sitting and Election Process

The ceremonial sitting of the Student Parliament began with the opening of the session. This was followed by the election of the Speaker, who plays a vital role in guiding the proceedings. The Speaker then took the oath, symbolizing their responsibility and commitment to the parliamentary process. Afterward, the student members were sworn in, marking their official entry into the Student Parliament.

Environmental Awareness and Educational Materials

In addition to the parliamentary activities, the event also included initiatives aimed at promoting environmental conservation. Valuable plants were presented to the school, symbolizing the importance of preserving nature and fostering a sense of environmental responsibility among students. Furthermore, the Vision magazine was handed over to the school, providing students with access to informative content about the Vision programme and its objectives.

This initiative was conducted with the participation of Deputy Speaker Dr. Rizvie Salih, who emphasized the significance of such educational outreach programs in shaping the minds of the younger generation.

Notable Attendees at the Event

The occasion was graced by the presence of several notable figures, including Committees’ Deputy Chairperson, MP Hemali Weerasekera; Secretary-General of Parliament Kushani Rohanadeera; President’s Legal Advisor J. M. Wijebandara; and Director-General of Public Relations of the Presidential Secretariat Dharmasiri Gamage.

Other attendees included DIG in charge of the President’s Security Division Roshan Wijesingha and the Director, Deputy Director, and Assistant Director of the Tri-Forces Coordinating Unit of the Presidential Secretariat. The Principal and teachers of Seevali Central College were also present, highlighting the collective effort to support and encourage student participation in parliamentary activities.
