The Ongoing TV Dispute Between Disney and Google
A leaked internal memo has revealed that the ongoing TV dispute between Disney and Google is far from being resolved, causing significant frustration among 10 million sports fans. This conflict has spilled over into a second weekend of sporting action, leaving YouTube TV subscribers unable to access any Disney-owned channels.
The impact on viewership includes all of ABC and ESPN’s college football slate, as well as the highly anticipated NFL Monday Night Football showdown between the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles. For many, this means missing out on crucial games and events that are otherwise available through other platforms.
In a recent development, The Athletic uncovered an internal memo sent by three high-ranking Disney executives, offering little hope of a resolution in the near future. The memo, signed by Disney Entertainment co-chairmen Dana Walden and Alan Bergman, along with ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro, highlights Disney’s stance on the matter.
“Rather than compete on a level playing field, Google’s YouTube TV has approached these negotiations as if it were the only player in the game,” the memo states. It goes on to emphasize that the reason consumers value Disney’s programming is due to its investment in top talent, creators, and content. Disney asserts that it cannot allow anyone to undermine its ability to do so.

Disney claims it has offered YouTube TV “fair terms that are in line with the more than 500 other distributors that have renewed their agreements since last summer.” These include major distributors that are significantly larger than YouTube TV. However, the company accuses YouTube TV of demanding “preferential terms that are below market” and making “few concessions” during negotiations.
YouTube TV responded to the situation, stating: “Once again, Disney is resorting to their old tactics like leaking documents to the press, negotiating in public through their paid talent, and misrepresenting the facts, including from the deals they’ve offered and taking credit for our product proposals.”
The spokesperson added that YouTube TV’s team is ready to make a fair agreement in line with Disney’s deals with other distributors and encourages Disney to come to the table to do what’s best for mutual customers.
Impact on Subscribers and Sports Fans
YouTubeTV, the popular cord-cutting streaming service owned by Google, pulled every channel owned by Disney off their platform on October 31. With 10 million subscribers, YouTube TV is the largest internet TV provider in the US. In comparison, Hulu, owned by Disney, has about half that number of subscribers.
NFL fans have already missed several key games, including the Arizona Cardinals’ win over the Dallas Cowboys, the Top 10 college game between BYU and Texas Tech, and the LSU and Alabama primetime clash on Saturday. On Monday, the Super Bowl champions Philadelphia will face Green Bay on ESPN in what is considered one of the best Monday Night Football games of the season.
However, YouTube TV subscribers will still have access to the NFL games on Sunday that air on Fox, CBS, and NBC. This partial access provides some relief, but it does not fully address the concerns of sports fans who rely on Disney’s channels for their favorite games.
Questions About the Future
As the standoff continues, many questions remain about the future of the relationship between Disney and YouTube TV. Can Google’s YouTube TV survive the ongoing conflict? Will millions of subscribers face another week without their sports fix due to the dispute?
Fans are scrambling for alternatives, and the situation raises concerns about how long the blackout will last. The outcome of this standoff could have significant implications for both companies and their customers.
Will either Disney or YouTube TV cave first in this battle of giants? Only time will tell, but for now, sports fans are left waiting for a resolution that could restore their access to essential programming.
