Yamashita Leads Rookie Charge; Yoon Faces Struggles

Rising Stars on the LPGA Tour

Yoon In-ah, 22 years old, and Yamashita Miyu, 24 years old from Japan, are two of the most anticipated rookies to debut on the LPGA Tour after qualifying through the Q-Series last year. Both have captured the attention of golf fans in their home countries—South Korea and Japan—leading to a strong friendship that has blossomed over time. The pair often meet for meals together, and they recently strengthened their bond with a dinner gathering before the Toto Japan Classic, which began on the 6th at Setagaya Golf Course (par 72, 6,616 yards) in Otsu City, Japan. The tournament features a total prize purse of $2.1 million.

Despite their shared status as newcomers, the two players have had contrasting experiences during their debut seasons. Yamashita Miyu, who has previously achieved 13 wins on the JLPGA Tour and topped the U.S. Q-Series, is now a strong contender for the LPGA Rookie of the Year award this season. She currently leads the Rookie of the Year rankings with 1,342 points, surpassing second-place Takeuchi Rio (Japan, 1,136 points). Yamashita made headlines by winning the AIG Women’s Open, a major tournament, and the Malaysia Maybank Championship in August. Among the 28 winners this season, only Yamashita and world No. 1 Jinno Titikun (Thailand) have secured multiple wins (two each). Additionally, Yamashita ranks second (144 points) in the Player of the Year standings, trailing only Titikun (169 points).

On the other hand, Yoon In-ah, who won two tournaments on the KLPGA Tour and qualified for the LPGA through the Q-Series in eighth place, has faced challenges in her debut season. In 24 tournaments this season, she has yet to finish in the top 10 and has missed the cut eight times. To qualify for the season finale, she needs to be within 60th in the CME Points rankings, but she is currently 67th. Yoon must improve her performance in the remaining two tournaments to reach the final event.

However, recent results suggest a positive trend for Yoon. Since October, she recorded a tie for 42nd at the Lotte Championship, a tie for 26th at the Buick Shanghai, a tie for 24th at the BMW Ladies, and a tie for 11th at the Maybank. Her CME Points ranking, which once dropped to 80th, has risen to 67th. Yoon is now seventh in the Rookie of the Year rankings with 355 points.

Performance in the Toto Japan Classic

Yoon started the first round of the Toto Japan Classic, co-hosted by the LPGA and JLPGA, tied for 53rd (even par). Meanwhile, Yamashita, alongside Hataoka Nasa (Japan), took an early lead tied for first (7-under par). Shin Ji-ai placed third (6-under par), while Katsu Minami, Iwai Akie, and the Jisato Twins from Japan tied for fourth (5-under par). This performance highlights the growing talent and competition on the LPGA Tour, with both Yoon and Yamashita representing the future of women’s golf.
