German President Meets Otumfuo Osei Tutu II
President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the head of state of the Federal Republic of Germany, recently made a courtesy visit to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. The meeting took place at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, where the two leaders engaged in a private discussion.
The German president was on a three-day state visit to Ghana and used the opportunity to further strengthen bilateral ties between Germany and the country. During his stay, he also visited the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi. There, he held discussions with the university’s leadership, highlighting the existing cooperation between Germany and KNUST.
According to President Steinmeier, the two nations have been working closely together in various academic disciplines, which has proven beneficial for both sides. He emphasized that Germany is committed to continuing this partnership and expanding it in the future.
“We already have a strong relationship, and we are ready to build on it,” he stated, acknowledging the importance of the Ghana-Germany collaboration. He pointed out that both countries have significant potential to enhance their mutual growth and development.
Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson, the Vice Chancellor of KNUST, outlined several areas where the university and Germany could collaborate in the coming years. These include research, innovation, and capacity building. She also highlighted the need for technical and logistical support from Germany to help KNUST fulfill its mission more effectively.
Akyeamfour Asafo Boakye Agyeman-Bonsu, the Asafohene, expressed gratitude on behalf of Otumfuo for the president’s visit to KNUST. He called for continued support from the German government to improve the university’s logistics and human resources. He praised KNUST as a leading academic institution with a rich history and urged Germany to deepen its engagement with the university.
“Your presence here is well-placed. You won’t find a better university than KNUST,” he said.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Frederik Landshöft, the German Ambassador to Ghana; Odeneho Okyere Kusi Ntrama, Esumegyahene; Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister for Education; Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, and other notable figures.
In a gesture of appreciation, KNUST, led by Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson, presented President Steinmeier with some beautifully crafted items made in Ghana. This act symbolized the warm welcome and respect extended to the German leader during his visit.
