Ukraine Strikes Russia’s Volgograd Oil Refinery
Ukraine’s armed forces have reportedly damaged Russia’s Volgograd oil refinery overnight, as Kyiv escalates its efforts to target the Kremlin’s energy infrastructure. This move is seen as part of a broader strategy to disrupt the funding that supports Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Photos and videos shared on the Telegram messaging platform show residents describing incoming drones and rockets heading towards the Volgograd refinery during the early hours of Thursday. The area was also under active air defense measures.
Volgograd region Governor Andrey Bocharov reported that a residential building and several homes were damaged in the attack. One person was killed, identified as a 48-year-old man who died from shrapnel caused by the shelling. Bocharov also confirmed that a fire broke out in the industrial Krasnoarmeysky district.
The refinery, operated by Russian oil giant Lukoil, is located approximately 450 kilometers from Ukrainian-controlled territory in Kramatorsk, Donetsk region. It plays a crucial role in supplying fuel to the Russian military, especially to units active in Ukraine’s Donbas region, which has been the most intense frontline for nearly four years.
This is not the first time the facility has been targeted by Ukrainian forces. The refinery had previously been forced to halt production after sustaining critical damage.
Additional Attacks on Russian Energy Infrastructure
Reports suggest another Ukrainian attack targeted the thermal energy power plant in Volgorechensk, Kostroma region. Local Russian Telegram accounts claim the plant was hit by drone attacks. The location is roughly 750 kilometers from Ukraine’s easternmost troops, indicating Kyiv’s ability to conduct long-range strikes within Russia.
There are also reports of additional strikes against Russian energy institutions, including an oil depot in the annexed Crimean Peninsula. The depot, located near Bitumne in Simferopol, is vital for supplying fuel to nearby Russian forces and units.
Impact on Ordinary Russians
The Ukrainian military has not yet commented on the recent wave of attacks. However, these strikes are part of a broader strategy aimed at bringing the war to ordinary Russians without risking their lives. By targeting energy facilities, Ukraine aims to affect everyday citizens and potentially create domestic pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the conflict and engage in peace talks for an immediate ceasefire.
Despite global efforts led by former US President Donald Trump to end the war, Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities continue. In Kamianske, Dnipropetrovsk region, eight people were injured and several fires were sparked during overnight Russian drone attacks. The attack mainly targeted civilian infrastructure, with many residential properties and vehicles destroyed.
Vladyslav Haivanenko, acting head of Dnipropetrovsk region Military Administration, noted that the attack caused significant damage to a four-storey building, with its roof and ceilings partially destroyed.
Ongoing Conflict and International Response
Russian attacks on Ukraine show no signs of slowing down. As the conflict continues, international efforts to mediate and find a resolution remain ongoing. Ukraine has received additional Patriot air defense systems from Germany to counter Russian attacks, highlighting the evolving nature of the war and the support from international allies.
