A Teenage Girl Rescued After Being Trafficked for Sexual Exploitation

A 15-year-old Nigerian girl, who was trafficked from Nigeria to Ghana for sexual exploitation, has been rescued by the Western Central Regional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service in Tarkwa. The girl, who is currently five weeks pregnant, went missing in October 2025 while in Nigeria. Her father, Ogbonno Onuigbo, reported her disappearance, which led to a police investigation. Based on intelligence gathered, the police arrested 25-year-old Joy Ogbonna at Aboso near Tarkwa on Monday, November 3, 2025.

According to a statement released by the Head of Public Affairs Unit, Western Central Command, ASP Beatrice Turkson, the victim contacted her father on October 24, 2025, revealing that she had been trafficked and abused in Ghana. The statement detailed how the victim was lured from Enugu to Lagos under the pretense of being offered a cleaning job by an individual named Golden Blessing. She was later handed over to Joy Ogbonna, who transported her to Tarkwa.

Once in Tarkwa, the suspect confined the victim in a room and forced her into sex work, collecting the proceeds from her exploitation. The victim was able to contact her father after a helpful passerby intervened, leading to her rescue. A medical report confirmed her pregnancy, adding to the gravity of the situation.

Joy Ogbonna is currently in police custody and is expected to be arraigned before court soon. Authorities are also working to locate her accomplice, Golden Blessing, who is believed to be in Nigeria. The police have expressed their commitment to combating human trafficking and protecting vulnerable individuals from all forms of exploitation.
