Mwanza Councils Told to Maximize Nutrition Funds

Addressing Malnutrition in Mwanza: A Call for Collaborative Action

In an effort to combat malnutrition and improve the health of vulnerable populations, local councils in Mwanza have been urged to use nutrition funds wisely. This call came from the Acting Mwanza Regional Administrative Secretary (RAS), Mr Henry Mwaibambe, during a recent meeting focused on the implementation of the Nutrition Agreement for the period between July and September 2025.

The meeting brought together a diverse group of participants, including experts, community representatives, and religious leaders. Their goal was to ensure that the national nutrition agreement is effectively implemented across the region. Mr Mwaibambe emphasized the importance of using available resources to benefit schoolchildren and other target groups as outlined in the guidelines.

“I advise councils to ensure that they use nutrition funds to benefit schoolchildren and other groups identified in the guidelines to give meaning to the nutrition agreement,” he stated. His remarks highlighted the need for careful planning and allocation of funds to achieve meaningful outcomes.

The Challenge of Malnutrition in Mwanza

Ms Sophia Lugome, the Mwanza Regional Nutrition Officer, shared some alarming statistics regarding the current state of nutrition in the region. During the July-September 2025 period, the region recorded a stunting rate of 28 per cent among children. She noted that Magu and Buchosa councils are leading in cases of stunting, urging their executive directors to intensify efforts to address this issue.

Ms Lugome also called upon experts and religious leaders to collaborate with her office in providing nutrition education and conducting public awareness campaigns. These campaigns will be conducted through various radio stations in the region, ensuring that critical information reaches a wide audience.

Preventive Health Measures and Policy Compliance

Meanwhile, Ms Jesca Lebba, the Mwanza Regional Medical Officer, highlighted the importance of the nutrition meeting as a preventive health platform. She emphasized the need to remind both staff and the community about unhealthy habits that contribute to non-communicable diseases. Ms Lebba also stressed the importance of implementing nutrition interventions in line with legal and policy requirements on a quarterly basis at the regional level.

This approach ensures that all efforts align with established guidelines and that progress can be monitored effectively. It also reinforces the role of local authorities in maintaining public health standards.

Addressing Underperformance in Kwimba District Council

As part of the meeting’s discussions, it was decided to summon Kwimba District Council due to its poor performance in budget planning and allocation for nutrition interventions. The council had submitted only four per cent of its planned budget, raising concerns about its commitment to the nutrition agenda.

By calling the council to explain its actions, the meeting aims to provide appropriate measures and support to ensure better performance in the future. This step underscores the importance of accountability and transparency in the use of nutrition funds.

Key Takeaways and Next Steps

To summarize, the meeting highlighted several key points:

  • Judicious Use of Funds: Local councils must ensure that nutrition funds are used effectively to benefit schoolchildren and other target groups.
  • Collaboration Among Stakeholders: Experts, religious leaders, and community representatives must work together to provide nutrition education and raise awareness.
  • Addressing Stunting Rates: Specific attention must be given to areas with high stunting rates, such as Magu and Buchosa councils.
  • Preventive Health Focus: The meeting served as a reminder of the importance of preventing non-communicable diseases through healthy habits.
  • Accountability and Transparency: Kwimba District Council will be held accountable for its underperformance in budget planning and allocation.

These steps are crucial in ensuring that the nutrition agreement achieves its intended goals and improves the overall health and well-being of the population in Mwanza.
