Strengthening Global Health Through Local Efforts
The Rotary Foundation has made a strong commitment to maintaining Nigeria’s polio-free status and reducing maternal and child mortality. This effort is seen as crucial for global health, with the contributions of Nigerian Rotarians and health workers playing a significant role in achieving these goals.
During a community dialogue and joint partners’ health outreach event held in Gwarinpa village, Abuja, Holger Knaack, chairman of the Rotary Foundation Board, highlighted the importance of continued efforts. He mentioned that although Africa was certified polio-free five years ago, ongoing vaccination campaigns are essential until the disease is completely eradicated worldwide.
“Rotary’s goal is to eradicate polio. As long as there are cases in Pakistan and Afghanistan, we must continue vaccinating children. Our children are not safe until every child everywhere is protected,” Knaack emphasized. He stressed that every newborn in Nigeria must receive polio immunization to prevent a resurgence of the disease.
Knaack also acknowledged the impact of the work done by Nigerians and Rotarians, stating that donors see their contributions making a real difference. “It is an investment in global health,” he added.
Ijeoma Pearl Okoro, a trustee of the Rotary Foundation, shared insights into the maternal and child health project. She noted that this initiative has successfully reduced mortality rates by 28 percent over three years in four pilot states. This achievement underscores the effectiveness of targeted health interventions and the importance of sustained efforts.
Alhaji Umar Bayaro, the Village Head of Gwarinpa, emphasized the significance of immunization in protecting the community. He pledged continued support for Rotary’s initiatives, recognizing the vital role these programs play in improving public health outcomes.
