Major Revolt Shakes Democrats as Moderates Yield on Shutdown

Rising Pressure on Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is under increasing pressure to step down as the leader of the Democratic Party in the Senate. This comes after reports surfaced that eight moderate Senate Democrats are planning to work with Republicans to end the ongoing government shutdown without securing the party’s main demand regarding health care subsidies.

Nina Turner, a former Ohio senator and co-chair of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) 2020 presidential campaign, voiced her criticism on social media. She wrote, “Chuck Schumer is unable to lead the Democratic Party. Step down from leadership Schumer.” Her comments reflect growing frustration among some members of the party who feel that Schumer is not effectively representing their interests.

The Ongoing Government Shutdown

The government shutdown, now in its 41st day, began on October 1 after Democrats refused to support any spending bill that did not include an extension of Obamacare subsidies. These subsidies are set to expire at the end of this year. If they do, an estimated 4 million Americans could lose their health insurance, and premiums for millions of Obamacare enrollees would more than double.

While Democrats have remained steadfast in their demand for the extension of these subsidies, a group of eight moderate Senate Democrats has agreed to vote on a spending bill to reopen the government. However, this bill does not include an agreement on extending the subsidies. Instead, it secures a promise from Republicans that the Senate will vote on extending the subsidies in December.

Criticism from Within the Party

Criticism of Schumer has come from within the Democratic Party as well. Aaron Regunberg, a former Rhode Island lawmaker and attorney, expressed his disappointment on social media. He wrote, “Has there ever been a man who’s failed to meet the moment more than Chuck Schumer?” He described Schumer as “relentlessly, incessantly, unstoppably wrong at every turn,” suggesting that he may be remembered as the worst Democratic legislative leader in modern times.

Rep. Ro Khanna also joined the chorus of criticism, calling for Schumer to be replaced. In a social media post, he stated, “Senator Schumer is no longer effective and should be replaced. If you can’t lead the fight to stop healthcare premiums from skyrocketing for Americans, what will you fight for?”

Progress on the Spending Bill

As of early Monday morning, the Senate has not yet voted on the spending bill that would re-open the government. However, on Sunday evening, the chamber voted 60-40 to advance consideration of the bill. House members have been informed that they should expect the spending bill to pass and to vote on it themselves sometime “this week,” according to The New York Times.

Key Developments

  • Moderate Democrats’ Decision:Eight moderate Senate Democrats have agreed to support a spending bill that would end the government shutdown without securing the extension of Obamacare subsidies.
  • Republicans’ Commitment:The bill includes a promise from Republicans that the Senate will vote on extending the subsidies in December.
  • Internal Party Criticism:Several Democratic members of Congress have criticized Schumer, questioning his leadership and effectiveness.
  • Upcoming Votes:The Senate has advanced the spending bill, and the House is expected to vote on it soon.

The situation highlights the internal divisions within the Democratic Party and the challenges faced by Schumer in maintaining unity and achieving key policy goals. As the government shutdown continues, the focus remains on finding a resolution that addresses both the immediate need to reopen the government and the long-term implications for health care coverage.
