Chung Eui-sun: Leader of Korean and Asian Archery

South Korea’s Archery Dominance in Asia

South Korea has once again demonstrated its exceptional strength in the world of archery, particularly on the Asian stage. On October 10th, during the 2025 World Archery Asia (WAA) General Assembly held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, the Korea Archery Association successfully secured positions for all Korean candidates as subcommittee members. This achievement marks a significant milestone, with four Koreans selected to serve on the subcommittees—a record number at a single general meeting, following the same success in the 2021 gathering.

This outcome highlights the growing recognition of South Korea’s expertise and influence within the Asian archery community. The country’s archery professionals are now playing a key role in shaping critical decisions that affect the development of archery across the continent.

Key Appointments and Responsibilities

The four Korean appointees include:

  • Kim Woo-jin– Representing Cheongju City Hall, he is a new addition to the subcommittee.
  • Lim Dong-hyun– A coach from Korea Sports University, also newly appointed.
  • Han Seung-hoon– A coach for the Target Archery Committee, affiliated with Hyundai Steel.
  • Dr. Kim Young-sook– A member of the Medical and Scientific Committee, representing the Korea Sports Science Institute.

These individuals will serve a four-year term until 2029, contributing to major decision-making processes across various divisions. Their roles will involve shaping Asian continental development programs, leader education, competition policies, technological advancements, and sports science initiatives.

The Korea Archery Association emphasized that this result reflects the international technical and administrative capabilities of South Korean archery being acknowledged globally. It also signals an expansion of South Korea’s voice and influence in future discussions regarding the development of archery in Asia.

Leadership and Legacy

Chung Eui-sun, the president of the Korea Archery Association, recently completed his term as president of the Asian Archery Federation. He served for 20 years, holding five consecutive terms since 2005. During his tenure, Chung played a pivotal role in enhancing the competitiveness and status of Asian archery by developing long-term strategies, expanding international exchanges, and strengthening support programs for underdeveloped countries.

At the recent general assembly, Chung was appointed as an honorary chairman of the WAA. This appointment marks a historic moment, as it is the first time that a father and son have held the honorary chairmanship simultaneously. Chung Mong-koo, who previously served as the third to fifth chairman of the Asian Archery Federation, was succeeded by his son, highlighting a generational transition in the leadership of Korean archery.

Future Prospects

The Korea Archery Association aims to continue building a stronger international administrative system and expanding its global influence. The association expressed confidence in the efforts of the newly elected subcommittee members, emphasizing their potential to contribute significantly to the growth and development of archery in Asia.

As South Korea continues to assert its leadership in the sport, the country remains committed to fostering excellence, innovation, and collaboration within the archery community.
