Greg Snow Takes Early Lead at Betika Masters
Greg Snow, a professional golfer from Muthaiga, delivered an impressive performance on Sunday at the Betika Masters, the eighth leg of the Sunshine Development Tour – East Africa Swing. Playing at Limuru Country Club, Snow shot a six-under-par 66, securing the lead after the first round.
Snow’s round was marked by consistency and precision. He carded birdies on the 3rd, 8th, 9th, 10th, 13th, and 14th holes, with his only drop coming at the par-4 7th. His ability to stay on the fairway and create scoring opportunities was key to his success.
“It was a solid day,” Snow said. “I stuck to my plan, kept the ball on the fairway, and gave myself enough chances. The course is soft, so you really have to be precise with approach shots. I’m happy with how I putted, and the goal now is to stay patient and keep the momentum going.”
Strong Competition in the Field
Snow was closely followed by elite amateur Michael Karanga and veteran Dismas Indiza, who both finished one shot behind on 5-under-par 67. Karanga’s round included six birdies against a single bogey, while Indiza recorded birdies on the 3rd, 5th, 6th, 9th, 17th, and 18th holes. His only dropped shot came at the 16th hole.
Karanga expressed satisfaction with the course conditions despite the rain. “Despite the rain, the course was good,” he said. “Tomorrow my focus is on improving my putting, especially on the front nine.”
A Competitive Field
The tournament attracted a strong field of 88 players from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Malawi, India, and the United States. Competitors are vying for a prize purse of Sh2 million, as well as OWGR and WAGR points, and Safari Tour Order of Merit points toward qualification for the 2026 Magical Kenya Open.
A trio of players—John Wangai, Celestin Nsanzuwera of Rwanda, and John Karichu of Limuru—closed the day on 3-under 69. Their performances highlight the depth of talent in the competition.
Tournament Structure and Next Steps
The second round of the Betika Masters will tee off on Monday. After that, the top 30 players and ties will advance to Tuesday’s final round. This format ensures that the competition remains intense and unpredictable throughout the event.
With the field set and the stakes high, the tournament promises to deliver exciting golf over the next few days. Players will need to maintain their focus and adapt to the course conditions as they compete for the title and valuable points.
