India etches history with thrilling World Cup final victory over South Africa

India’s Historic Victory in the Women’s Cricket World Cup

India made history by winning their first-ever Women’s Cricket World Cup, securing a thrilling 52-run victory over South Africa in a rain-delayed final at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The match, which saw both teams display exceptional skill and determination, ended with India posting a formidable total of 298-7 and South Africa being all out for 246.

A Strong Start from India

The Indian team started their innings positively, despite the initial delay caused by rain. They reached 50 within the first seven overs, thanks to a strong opening partnership between Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana. The duo added 104 runs before Mandhana was dismissed for 45, edging a delivery from Chloe Tryon that was caught by Sune Luus.

Verma continued her impressive performance, scoring 87 off 78 balls. However, she was dropped on 56 by Anneke Bosch at deep mid-wicket, which could have changed the course of the innings. She was eventually caught by Sune Luus off Annerie Dercksen, marking the end of the opening stand.

Mid-Innings Challenges

India faced a mid-innings stutter as they slipped from 166-1 to 245-5. Annerie Dercksen took two wickets, including Jemimah Rodrigues (24) and Harmanpreet Kaur (20), while Nonkululeko Mlaba bowled out Harmanpreet. Amanjot Kaur was also run out by Nadine de Klerk, further complicating India’s chase.

Despite these setbacks, Deepti Sharma provided crucial stability with a run-a-ball 58, adding 47 runs with Richa Ghosh (34) for the sixth wicket. Her efforts helped India post the second-highest total in a World Cup final.

South Africa’s Response

South Africa’s reply began with some promising performances, but they struggled to maintain consistency. Part-time bowler Shafali Verma took two wickets, and Deepti Sharma claimed five wickets for 39 runs, including the dismissal of Sinalo Jafta (16). Captain Laura Wolvaardt, however, played a vital role, scoring an unbeaten 101, her second consecutive ODI century.

Wolvaardt’s century brought South Africa closer to the target, but Deepti Sharma’s sharp bowling and fielding proved decisive. She ran out Ayabonga Khaka and dismissed Nadine de Klerk, leaving South Africa struggling to make a significant impact.

A Thrilling Finish

In a dramatic final over, Deepti Sharma managed to run out Ayabonga Khaka and dismiss Nadine de Klerk, sealing India’s victory. South Africa was all out for 246 in the 46th over, marking a historic win for India in the Women’s Cricket World Cup.

This victory not only highlights the strength and resilience of the Indian women’s cricket team but also marks a significant milestone in the sport’s history. The team’s performance, especially from Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma, will be remembered as one of the most remarkable in the tournament’s history.
