Katsina United Fined for Crowd Violence in NPFL Match
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has imposed a hefty fine of ₦9 million on Katsina United and ordered the club to play all their remaining home matches in Jos without any fans. This decision came after a series of violent incidents during their 1–1 draw with Barau FC on Saturday.
According to a statement released on Sunday, the league claimed that Katsina United violated several rules, including inadequate security measures and failure to control their supporters. It was reported that some fans managed to enter restricted areas and threw harmful objects onto the pitch, resulting in injuries to some Barau FC players.
“The club failed to ensure proper behavior from their supporters, which led to harassment of Barau FC players and match officials,” the NPFL stated in its official communication. The league added that the actions of the fans not only disrupted the game but also damaged the image of the league.
The fine is divided into three parts: ₦3 million for the misconduct of fans and damage to the league’s image, ₦2 million for poor security arrangements, and ₦4 million to cover the medical expenses of injured players and the cost of repairing Barau FC’s buses. This brings the total fine to ₦9 million.
In addition to the financial penalty, the NPFL has mandated that Katsina United must host all their remaining home games at the New Jos Stadium without spectators. The club has been given 48 hours to appeal the decision if they wish to challenge it.
Reports indicated that Barau FC player Nana Abraham suffered a neck injury after being attacked by fans when his team equalized in the 69th minute. The incident caused significant chaos, and match officials had to intervene to restore order before the game ended in a 1–1 draw.
However, Katsina United has denied the allegations, calling them “false and misleading.” The club’s media director, Nasir Gide, claimed that security officials maintained order throughout the game and that no supporter entered the pitch. He further stated that the club would take legal action against any media outlet spreading what it called “untrue stories.”
This incident follows a similar case just weeks ago, when the NPFL fined Kano Pillars ₦9.5 million for crowd violence during their home game against Shooting Stars.
