Springbok Coach Rassie Erasmus Considers Major Lineup Changes for Italy Clash
Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus is preparing to make significant changes to his starting lineup for the upcoming match against Italy in Turin. One of the most anticipated moves is the potential return of Handre Pollard to the starting team. Pollard, who played a pivotal role in the 2023 World Cup victory, has been sidelined from the flyhalf position this season due to the emergence of Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Manie Libbok.
Feinberg-Mngomezulu has started the last five Tests, while Libbok has taken over in the closing stages of matches. Erasmus explained that Pollard’s current position is not a result of being discarded but rather a strategic decision to give younger players a chance at the highest level.
“Handre is likely to play against Italy with Manie on the bench — or maybe the other way around. It is good to have the consistency of Handre, a player who knows and understands what he’s doing and is only 31 years old. If you compare him to Johnny Sexton, he could still play two more World Cups,” Erasmus said before the match at the Stade de France.
Ethan Hooker in the Midfield
In addition to Pollard’s possible return, Erasmus is considering an exciting midfield combination by giving Ethan Hooker a shot at inside centre alongside Canan Moodie. Hooker, who has primarily played on the wing for both the Boks and the Sharks, has always preferred the centre position. His talent was evident during his schoolboy days at Westville Boys’ High in Durban.
At the Sharks, Hooker’s path to the No 12 jersey is blocked by Andre Esterhuizen, while at the Springboks, it is Damian de Allende. However, Erasmus is open to giving Hooker some playing time at 12 with Canan at 13.
“Maybe we will give Ethan some playing time at 12 with Canan at 13,” Erasmus said.
Strategic Rest for Key Players
Erasmus is also expected to rest some senior players ahead of the crucial clash against Ireland in Dublin next week. The Boks are determined to reverse their recent results against a team that has beaten them in three of the last four encounters.
However, Erasmus is aware of the need to avoid making too many changes against a dangerous Italian side. Italy recently defeated Australia, proving they are a formidable opponent.
Preparing for the Upcoming Challenges
Despite the potential changes, Erasmus remains focused on ensuring the team is well-prepared for the challenges ahead. The coach’s decisions reflect a balance between giving younger players experience and maintaining the strength of the squad.
With the upcoming matches against Italy and Ireland, the Springboks are looking to build momentum and secure strong results. The inclusion of Pollard and Hooker in the lineup could provide the necessary boost to achieve these goals.
