OPay Disburses N126m in Education Grants to 420 Undergraduates
In a significant move towards educational empowerment, financial technology company OPay has successfully disbursed N126 million in education grants to 420 undergraduate students across 20 universities within the span of 12 months. This achievement was highlighted during the launch of CyberLabs and the celebration of the first anniversary of the N1.2 Billion Scholarship Programme.
The event, known as the Empowering Futures 2025 conference, brought together representatives from participating universities and students to commemorate the one-year milestone of this impactful education support initiative. The conference served as a platform for sharing insights, experiences, and future goals related to the program.
A Strategic Commitment to Social Impact
Elizabeth Wang, OPay’s Chief Commercial Officer, emphasized that the scholarship initiative remains at the core of the company’s social impact strategy. She also mentioned that complementary programs like CyberLabs will continue to play a vital role in supporting capacity development and digital literacy among students.
“Through the CyberLabs Project, we are not only upgrading university technology facilities but also creating platforms where students can learn directly from some of the best minds in the industry,” Wang stated. “Our goal is to bridge the gap between academia and real-world innovation, ensuring Nigerian students are equipped with the knowledge and tools to thrive in today’s technology-driven world.”
Fostering Digital Literacy and Innovation
The CyberLabs initiative is designed to enhance the technological infrastructure of universities while offering students access to industry experts. This dual approach ensures that students gain practical knowledge alongside academic learning, preparing them for the challenges of the modern workforce.
Itoro Udo, OPay’s CSR Manager, reiterated the company’s vision to build a financial ecosystem that empowers people. She highlighted education as a key driver of national progress and stressed the importance of investing in both learning and technology.
“Education is the future of society, and students are the builders of that future. By investing in both learning and technology, OPay will continue to demonstrate its role as a catalyst for inclusive growth in Nigeria,” Udo said.
Support from University Leadership
Several Vice-Chancellors from participating institutions praised OPay’s sustained commitment to education. Their endorsements reflect the positive impact the company’s initiatives have had on students and academic institutions alike.
Professor Florence Obi, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, pledged to promote OPay’s initiatives on campus. She encouraged students to embrace digital financial inclusion and leverage the scholarship to achieve academic success.
“We are proud to partner with OPay to open the doors of opportunity for our students – when we equip young minds with digital-financial tools, we’re not only supporting their studies, we’re enabling them to meaningfully participate in tomorrow’s economy,” Prof. Obi said.
Expanding the Reach of Educational Opportunities
OPay’s efforts have not only provided financial assistance to students but have also created a foundation for long-term educational and economic growth. The company’s focus on digital literacy and innovation positions it as a key player in shaping the future of education in Nigeria.
With continued investment in education and technology, OPay aims to foster a generation of skilled professionals who can contribute to the country’s development. The success of the N1.2 Billion Scholarship Programme and the CyberLabs initiative demonstrates the potential of such collaborations to drive meaningful change.
As OPay continues to expand its reach, the impact of its initiatives will likely be felt across various sectors, contributing to a more inclusive and prosperous society.
