Jody Morris, a long-time collaborator with Frank Lampard, has expressed his belief that the former Chelsea legend could be a strong candidate to take over as the manager of the England national team once Thomas Tuchel’s tenure comes to an end. Morris highlighted Lampard’s impressive performance as head coach of Coventry City, where the team currently leads the Championship table and is on track for promotion to the Premier League if they maintain their current form in the 2025-26 season.
The transformation at Coventry City under Lampard has been nothing short of remarkable. When he took charge last season, the club was sitting in 17th place in the league. However, under his guidance, they made a stunning run that saw them reach the play-offs. This success has continued into the new season, with the Sky Blues starting the campaign strongly and showing signs of being a serious contender for promotion.
Morris, who has worked alongside Lampard during his managerial roles at Derby County and Chelsea, believes that the former midfielder was unfairly criticized after his departure from Everton in 2023 and his brief caretaker role at Chelsea. According to Morris, Lampard is currently the most successful manager in any league this season, not just the Championship. This performance has led to speculation that the English Football Association (FA) may consider him as a potential successor to Tuchel, who is under contract until the end of the 2026 World Cup.
In a recent interview with foot-care via GeckoPlay Casino, Morris commented on Lampard’s potential future with the England team:
-
“Absolutely. When you look at the English managers that are out there, Eddie Howe is the outstanding candidate. He has been for the last five or six years. But then you can’t help but think about Lampard.”
-
“The jobs he’s done at previous clubs already, he’s English, he’s bright. I think it’s something he’d be open to. He’s performed at [international] level and knows what it takes.”
-
“He understands players really well. I think it’d be a great fit for the FA. If he’d want to do it after Tuchel, it depends how long he’s in the job for… I don’t know.”
-
“If Lampard gets the success he looks like he’s en route to getting at Coventry, I’d imagine quite a few people would like his services.”

When asked whether Lampard was written off too quickly as a football manager, Morris added:
-
“Yeah I think so. I know how much hard work he puts into the jobs he’s doing.”
-
“He had a difficult time at Everton after helping to keep them up. A lot of people said they were favourites to go down and he did a great job in keeping them up.”
-
“The season after that, he would’ve liked to have performed a little better but there were a lot of things going on around the club. Previous managers and the managers after him found it to be a difficult job.”

-
“Looking back at it, I think he did a better job than he was given credit for at the time. Coming back to Chelsea, he’d admit himself he’d have liked to have done better.”
-
“But again, he came into the role when the club was in a massive transition. I don’t think the place was great the moment he walked in.”
-
“But he’s proving now, if you look at what he’s done at Coventry, I don’t think there’s too many managers who’ve done a better job in any league, let alone just the Championship.”

-
“The performances he’s got from individual players and the team collectively. When he arrived, they were towards the bottom of the league and went racing up.”
-
“They managed to make the play-offs and he’s continued that form with an outstanding start to this season. It’s not just the points accumulation, it’s the football they’re playing.”
-
“They’re difficult to beat and they’re an attractive side to watch, scoring a load of goals. I thought they were better than Sunderland in both [play-off] games [last season].”
-
“It shows you how small the margins are. One individual error or set-piece can knock you out. I was gutted for him. But an amazing job he’s doing.”
