Wedding, Yoga, Pilates Businesses to Reveal Costs Immediately

New Regulations for Wedding and Wellness Services in South Korea

Starting from the 12th, businesses offering wedding services such as “sudume” (studio photo shoots, wedding dress reservations, and bride makeup services) or yoga and pilates services will be required to provide consumers with detailed pricing information in advance. This new regulation is part of an amendment to the “Important Display and Advertising Matters Notice,” which was announced by the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) on the 11th.

Key Requirements for Wedding Service Businesses

The revised notice mandates that wedding service businesses—including those operating wedding halls, providing wedding preparation agency services, and others—must disclose their fee structures, refund criteria, and other essential details to consumers. These businesses are now required to publicly share itemized service details (basic services and optional items), fees, contract termination penalties, and refund criteria on either their own websites or the Korea Consumer Agency’s Price Information Site (www.price.go.kr). This transparency allows prospective couples to review pricing information before committing to any services.

Transparency in Yoga and Pilates Services

In addition to wedding services, yoga and pilates businesses must also display specific service details, fee structures (including basic fees and additional costs), mid-contract termination fees, and refund criteria in their business premises’ posted materials and customer registration forms. These details must also be included in any advertisements. This ensures that consumers are fully informed about the financial aspects of their membership or service contracts.

Additional Measures for Exercise Facilities

Operators of health clubs, yoga, pilates, and other exercise facilities must also disclose whether they have joined consumer damage compensation measures such as guarantee insurance. If they have, they must specify the name of the guaranteeing institution, coverage period, and amount. This measure aims to prevent so-called “no-payment fraud” incidents caused by sudden business suspensions or closures. By requiring this information, the KFTC hopes to protect consumers from financial losses due to unexpected business failures.

Guidance Period for Business Operators

The KFTC plans to designate the next six months as a guidance period, considering the need for business operators to prepare for these new requirements. During this time, businesses will have the opportunity to update their pricing disclosures and ensure compliance with the revised notice. This period is intended to allow for a smooth transition and minimize disruptions for both businesses and consumers.

Benefits of the New Regulations

These new regulations are designed to enhance transparency and consumer protection in the wedding and wellness service industries. By requiring businesses to provide clear and detailed pricing information, consumers can make more informed decisions and avoid potential misunderstandings or disputes. Additionally, the requirement for businesses to disclose their participation in consumer damage compensation measures adds an extra layer of security for customers.

Conclusion

The implementation of these new regulations marks a significant step toward greater accountability and transparency in the service industry. As businesses adapt to these changes, consumers can expect a more reliable and informed experience when seeking wedding or wellness services. The KFTC’s efforts to promote fair practices and protect consumer rights are likely to have a positive impact on the overall market, fostering trust and confidence among service providers and customers alike.
