KOTRA Unveils First North American Hallyu Expo in New York

Introduction to the KOTRA Hallyu Expo in North America

Kang Kyung-sung, president of the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), recently announced the successful hosting of the first ‘KOTRA Hallyu (Korean Wave) Expo’ in the North American region. This significant event took place in New Jersey, United States, where Kang provided a detailed briefing on the initiative.

Expansion of the Hallyu Expo Initiative

According to Kang, this Hallyu Expo marks KOTRA’s first event in the North American region. The growing influence of the Korean Wave has prompted KOTRA to increase the frequency of these expos from once a year to four times a year. As part of this expansion, the event is now being held in New York as well.

Purpose and Structure of the Hallyu Expo

Since 2010, KOTRA has been organizing Hallyu Expos worldwide under the theme of ‘Hallyu (Korean Wave).’ These events aim to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that produce and sell consumer goods by utilizing K-content and Hallyu star marketing strategies. During these expos, SMEs have the opportunity to meet with local buyers and general consumers for export consultations and promotions leveraging the Hallyu phenomenon.

Participation and Activities at the Event

In the business-to-business (B2B) expo, 100 domestic consumer goods companies and 235 local buyers participated in export consultations. Starting the following day, a business-to-consumer (B2C) expo will offer local residents an opportunity to experience and purchase Hallyu-related products.

KOTRA plans to install ‘reverse direct purchase QR codes’ so that visitors can purchase products immediately. Additionally, the event will feature performances by Hallyu artists such as Taemin and Hwasa, as well as a K-pop artist costume experience zone.

Economic Impact and Future Goals

Kang emphasized that despite ongoing tariff wars and the rise of protectionism, the export value of consumer goods increased by 6.6% compared to the same period last year as of September this year. It is expected that this growth will lead to the highest export growth rate in history by the end of the year.

Through the KOTRA New York Hallyu Expo, KOTRA aims to expand the reach of the Korean Wave to consumer goods and accelerate the era of 1 trillion Korean won in exports to the U.S.
