The Complex Nature of Human Beings
Human beings are inherently complex creatures, often displaying a volatile and unpredictable nature. According to the teachings of the Holy Qur’an, humans are described as being “prone to evil” and possessing characteristics that can be considered untrustworthy, ungrateful, and wicked. This complexity is further reflected in their varying behaviors, attitudes, and interests, making them a fascinating subject of study.
The Qur’an provides profound insights into the nature of man, highlighting his tendency to be ungrateful. No matter how much comfort or blessings one receives, there is always a complaint. For example, during the summer, people often complain about the heat, finding it difficult to sleep or wear heavy clothes. They may pray for rain to ease the situation. However, when the rain comes, they might then complain about the inconvenience caused by heavy downpours, which hinders their business activities. Similarly, during winter, complaints about dusty atmospheres or dryness are common. It seems that no natural season is free from human complaints.
Behavior in Times of Trouble
Man’s behavior changes significantly when he is in trouble compared to when he is in good health. The Qur’an highlights this inconsistency in Surah 10:12, where it states, “When trouble touches a man, he cries unto us (in all postures); lying down on his side, or sitting or standing. But when we have solved his trouble he passes on his way as if he had never cried to us for a trouble that touched him!” This verse illustrates how individuals often turn to Allah in moments of distress, seeking refuge and help. However, once their problems are resolved, they tend to forget their dependence on Him.
Another verse in the Qur’an, Surah 17:67, emphasizes this ingratitude: “When distress seizes you at sea, those that ye call upon – besides Himself – leave you in the lurch! But when He brings you back safe to land, ye turn away (from Him). Most ungrateful is man.” This passage reveals that humans tend to remember Allah more during times of danger but quickly forget Him once the danger has passed. This pattern of behavior underscores the fickle nature of human gratitude.
Deception and Betrayal
Betrayers are often found among those we least expect. People who are close to us, with whom we share our lives, may betray us. These individuals are typically hypocrites and pretenders who appear loyal but work against our interests. When we achieve success, they may pretend to be happy, yet deep inside, they feel unhappy. They find joy in our misfortunes, which makes them deceptive and difficult to trust.
This kind of behavior is a reflection of the devilish dispositions that some humans possess. They can hide their true intentions for a lifetime, making them a complex creature. Such traits lead to a state where humans, despite being created in the best of molds by Allah, can become the lowest of the low if they misuse their intellect and abilities.
The Importance of Righteousness
Allah created humans in the purest nature, granting them discretion and honor. However, if they use this honor incorrectly, they risk losing it and falling to a lower status than even the beasts. Those who use their Allah-given intellect righteously to control their innate tendencies can achieve a high and noble destiny. Believers must strive to rise above vices such as mischief, hatred, malice, envy, ingratitude, deceit, dishonesty, corruption, back-biting, cheating, betrayal, and forgery.
Unity and Guidance
As humanity spread across the earth, evils multiplied, and the brotherhood of mankind was almost lost. Arrogance, selfishness, and falsehood took root in their hearts. However, Allah’s infinite mercy and love ensure that He guides and forgives individuals and nations. He turns what seems like evil into good, never forsaking those who strive to seek His will.
May Allah cleanse us of all evil thoughts and actions inherent in man, so that we may be part of the righteous group of men and women. Amin.
