AnambraDecides2025: Youths and Police Halt Thugs at Ekwunife’s Polling Unit

Electoral Tensions and Alleged Vote Buying in Anambra State

Tension erupted at Senator Uche Ekwunife’s polling unit on Saturday when suspected individuals, allegedly hired by the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), attempted to disrupt the voting process. The incident took place at Regal Secondary School in Aguukwu Nri, where the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ekwunife, cast her vote.

Eyewitnesses reported that the thugs stormed the polling unit in what appeared to be an effort to prevent the peaceful conduct of the election. However, the quick response from the Nri youths and security personnel on the ground managed to thwart their plans. Their prompt actions restored order and allowed voting to continue after a brief interruption.

Despite the restored calm, reports indicated that vote buying was widespread across several polling units in the area. Representatives from major political parties were observed openly giving money to voters in exchange for their support. This practice has raised serious concerns about the integrity of the electoral process.

After casting her vote at Polling Unit 009, Regal Secondary School, Nri, Senator Ekwunife expressed her disappointment over the high level of electoral malpractice, particularly the rampant vote buying that characterized the exercise.

“There is an urgent need for my colleagues and the relevant authorities to take more drastic action against vote buying in Nigeria. If this menace is not checked, it will become almost impossible for competent and capable individuals to emerge as leaders and serve their people effectively,” she said.

Ekwunife also accused Governor Charles Soludo of prioritizing political manipulation over effective governance. “What is happening in Anambra State today is unfortunate. Instead of providing good governance, Governor Soludo is busy corrupting the system through monetary inducement to secure votes for his re-election,” she alleged.

She added that before her arrival at the polling center, over 100 thugs allegedly loyal to the governor had been deployed to disrupt the process. “As a politician who has remained grounded in my community and contributed to its development even without holding an executive position, I could not allow such intimidation. I am proud that the people stood their ground and resisted these anti-democratic forces,” she stated.

Ekwunife commended the courage of the Nri youths and the professionalism of the police officers who ensured that the will of the people prevailed.

Key Issues Highlighted During the Election

  • Electoral Malpractice: Reports of vote buying indicate a deep-seated problem in the current electoral process.
  • Security Concerns: The presence of suspected thugs highlights the need for stronger security measures during elections.
  • Political Manipulation: Accusations of governors using financial incentives to gain support raise questions about the integrity of leadership.
  • Community Resistance: The bravery of local youths and security forces played a crucial role in maintaining order.

Impact on Future Governance

The events in Anambra State underscore the challenges faced by democratic processes in Nigeria. With allegations of vote buying and political interference, there is a pressing need for reforms that ensure fair and transparent elections. The role of citizens in resisting such practices cannot be overstated, as their actions can determine the direction of future governance.

As the election continues, the focus remains on ensuring that the voice of the people is heard and that the democratic process is upheld. The actions of individuals like Senator Ekwunife demonstrate the importance of standing up against corruption and advocating for a more just political system.
