Enhanced Performance and Range for the 2026 BMW i4
The 2026 BMW i4 has officially arrived, bringing with it a series of notable updates that enhance both its performance and driving range. This electric sedan continues to be a strong contender in the EV market, offering improvements that cater to a wider range of drivers.
One of the most significant changes is the introduction of new silicon carbide (SiC) inverters. These advanced components are more efficient than traditional silicon semiconductors, allowing the entry-level 2026 BMW i4 eDrive40 to deliver over 300 miles of range on a full charge, regardless of the wheel size. With 18-inch wheels, the rear-wheel drive EV has an estimated range of 333 miles, which is an increase of 15 miles from the previous model. For those opting for 19-inch wheels, the range drops slightly to 307 miles, still an improvement of 12 miles.

A New Powerhouse: The i4 M60
In addition to the improved range, the 2026 model also introduces a new top-of-the-line variant called the i4 M60. This model replaces the previous i4 M50 and is powered by two electric motors, delivering a combined maximum output of 593 horsepower—57 hp more than before. This increased power allows the i4 M60 to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. Despite the added performance, the i4 M60 also boasts a longer range than its predecessor. On 19-inch wheels, it can travel 11 extra miles, while on 20-inch wheels, it gains an additional 5 miles.
The battery capacity remains consistent across all trims at 83.4 kilowatt-hours, and the peak charging power is still set at 200 kilowatts. BMW claims that drivers can add between 88 and 108 miles of range in just 10 minutes using a powerful enough DC fast charger. The non-M versions of the i4 also maintain their power outputs, with the rear-wheel-drive i4 eDrive40 delivering 335 horsepower and the dual-motor i4 xDrive40 topping out at 396 horsepower.

A Curious Drop in Range for All-Wheel-Drive Models
Despite these enhancements, there is one area where the 2026 model has seen a slight downgrade. The all-wheel-drive, non-M Performance i4’s range has been reduced after this latest update. Previously, the 2025 model could deliver between 282 and 307 miles of range depending on the wheel size. In contrast, the 2026 model now estimates a range between 268 and 287 miles.
Availability and Additional Features
Order books for the 2026 BMW i4 are already open at dealerships across the United States. All i4 EVs now come standard with a tire repair kit, and the Drive Recorder function has been added to the Parking Assistant Professional package. The updated BMW i4 was first announced in Europe earlier this year, and now the changes have made their way to the U.S. as well.
