3,915 Dead, 24,674 Injured in Eight Months — FRSC Report

Rising Road Crashes and Fatalities in Nigeria

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported a significant increase in road crashes and fatalities across Nigeria between January and September 2025. According to the data, 3,915 individuals lost their lives in 7,715 road accidents recorded nationwide during this period. Additionally, 24,674 people sustained injuries of varying severity.

These figures represent a notable rise compared to the statistics from 2024. The FRSC Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, highlighted these numbers during the National Town Hall Meeting and Ember Months Road Safety Campaign flag-off event held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The campaign, themed “Take Responsibility for Your Safety; Stop Distracted Driving,” aimed to raise awareness about road safety and encourage responsible behavior among drivers.

Mohammed noted that the number of road crashes increased by 10.04% in 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, with a 10.28% rise in injuries and an 11.55% increase in fatalities. However, there was a positive trend observed in Rivers State, where the number of deaths dropped by 35.7%, and injuries decreased by 37.5% compared to the previous year.

He attributed the improved performance in Rivers State to better emergency response mechanisms and heightened road safety awareness. Despite these improvements, he emphasized that the national statistics are alarming, as road crashes continue to have devastating effects on families and communities.

“Road crashes can destroy families, weaken communities, and impose severe socio-economic burdens on our nation,” Mohammed stated. He urged all road users to exercise caution, discipline, and vigilance while traveling on highways.

Strategic Focus on Rivers State

The decision to launch this year’s Ember Months Campaign in Rivers State was intentional, given its status as one of the busiest transportation hubs in Nigeria. The FRSC has been strengthening its proactive interventions, enhancing operations, expanding public enlightenment campaigns, and integrating technology into road safety management.

In preparation for the anticipated traffic surge during the festive season, the FRSC has already begun implementing its program outline for safe and secure road transportation during the Ember Months.

Government’s Role in Ensuring Road Safety

In his keynote address before the campaign flag-off, Rivers State Governor Siminialayi Fubara warned motorists and boat operators to be more vigilant and avoid speeding during the festive period. Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Benibo Anabraba, Fubara called on the National Union of Road Transport Workers and the Maritime Workers Union to sensitize their members against unsafe driving behaviors such as speeding, drink-driving, and negligence.

The governor acknowledged the state government’s investment in quality road infrastructure but pointed out that road crashes persist due largely to drivers’ poor attitudes.

Key Initiatives for Safer Roads

To address these challenges, the FRSC has taken several steps to improve road safety:

  • Proactive Interventions:The FRSC has intensified its efforts to prevent road accidents through regular patrols and monitoring.
  • Advanced Operations:Enhanced coordination with local authorities and other stakeholders has improved response times and accident management.
  • Public Awareness Campaigns:Educational programs and media outreach have been expanded to reach a wider audience.
  • Technology Integration:The use of modern technology, such as surveillance systems and mobile apps, has been introduced to monitor and manage traffic effectively.

Conclusion

While the overall statistics for 2025 remain concerning, the progress made in Rivers State offers a glimpse of what can be achieved with coordinated efforts and community involvement. As the Ember Months approach, it is crucial for all road users to remain vigilant and committed to safer driving practices.
