A Legacy of Service, Not Entitlement — Son of Obasa

A Legacy of Service and the Journey to Leadership

AbdulGaniyu Vinod Obasa, the newly sworn-in Chairman of Agege Local Government Area in Lagos State, has shared insights into his motivations for entering politics. He emphasized that his journey into leadership is rooted in a legacy of service rather than entitlement. According to him, true leadership requires dedication, hard work, and a commitment to making a positive impact on the community.

In a post on X, AbdulGaniyu highlighted that he was raised in a family known for its public service. His father, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, serves as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. However, he stressed that this background does not grant him any special privileges. Instead, it comes with the responsibility of proving his sincerity and devotion to the people of Agege.

He noted that having a recognizable name can sometimes make public service more challenging. “Being young and having a name people recognize doesn’t make the work easier,” he said. “If anything, it makes it harder because you have to prove, again and again, that you’re here to serve, not to sit.”

AbdulGaniyu’s focus in Agege has always been on delivering tangible results. His initiatives include food subsidy programs, drainage cleanups, youth empowerment, and community safety projects. He believes that progress is measured by its impact, not by the name associated with it.

“I was born into a legacy of public service, and that’s exactly what it is: a legacy of service, not entitlement,” he wrote. “For me, leadership isn’t an inheritance. It’s a responsibility I have to earn every single day. From food subsidy programs to drainage cleanups, youth empowerment, and community safety, my focus has always been simple: deliver results that improve lives. Because progress has no last name, only impact.”

His remarks came after the resignation of the former Agege Local Government Chairman, Hon. Tunde Azeez Disco, who stepped down due to health challenges that affected his ability to perform his duties. Tribune Online reported that Disco submitted his resignation letter to the Agege Legislative Council leadership on Wednesday.

Following his resignation, the Leader of the House, Hon. Adeshina Haruna, administered the oath of office to AbdulGaniyu, who had previously served as vice chairman under Disco. Haruna commended the former chairman for his selfless service to the community and confirmed that the council unanimously approved AbdulGaniyu’s appointment as substantive chairman. This decision was made to ensure stability and effective local governance.

The council also reaffirmed its oversight role, pledging stronger monitoring and evaluation of ongoing projects within the local government. This commitment reflects a broader effort to maintain accountability and ensure that the needs of the people are met effectively.

Key Initiatives and Future Goals

AbdulGaniyu’s leadership approach is centered around actionable outcomes. His initiatives in Agege include:

  • Food Subsidy Programs: Aimed at supporting low-income families and ensuring access to essential nutrition.
  • Drainage Cleanups: Focused on improving infrastructure and preventing flooding during the rainy season.
  • Youth Empowerment: Designed to provide skills training and opportunities for young people in the area.
  • Community Safety: Involves collaboration with local authorities to enhance security and reduce crime.

These efforts underscore his belief that leadership should be measured by the impact it has on the community. He emphasized that the journey ahead is not about his personal achievements but about what the people of Agege can accomplish together.

The Importance of Accountability and Oversight

With the new leadership in place, there is a renewed emphasis on accountability and oversight within the local government. The council has pledged to strengthen its monitoring and evaluation processes to ensure that all projects are implemented efficiently and effectively.

This commitment to transparency is crucial for maintaining public trust and ensuring that the resources allocated to the community are used wisely. By prioritizing oversight, the council aims to create a more responsive and accountable governance structure that benefits all residents of Agege.

As AbdulGaniyu takes on his new role, the people of Agege look forward to continued progress and development under his leadership. His focus on delivering results and serving the community remains a guiding principle in his approach to governance.
