New Healthcare Facilities Enhance Medical Services in Tarfaya and Laayoune

On Thursday, a significant milestone was achieved in the healthcare sector of Morocco as the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Amine Tahraoui, inaugurated the new Tarfaya Regional Hospital. The event marked the official launch of its services, along with the opening of the «Cooperation» first-level urban health center in Laayoune. These developments are part of the broader royal vision aimed at reforming the national health system and advancing the project for universal health coverage and social protection.

The inauguration ceremony brought together several key figures, including the Wali of the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region, Abdel Salam Bekrat, the governor of Tarfaya province, Mohamed Hmime, and various elected officials. Their presence underscored the importance of these new facilities in addressing the growing healthcare needs of the local population.

Tarfaya Regional Hospital: A Modern Healthcare Hub

The newly constructed Tarfaya Regional Hospital is built on an 8-hectare site, featuring 7,300 square meters of covered space. The project cost 60 million dirhams and offers a capacity of 70 beds, serving more than 16,400 residents in the area. The hospital’s medical team consists of 102 professionals, including 13 doctors, 60 nurses and medical assistants, and 29 administrative and technical staff.

According to the Ministry of Health, the hospital will play a crucial role in easing the pressure on other healthcare facilities in the region. It is expected to reduce the need for patients to travel to neighboring provinces for treatment, thereby improving access to quality care for the local population.

«Cooperation» Urban Health Center: Expanding Access to Care

In Laayoune, the newly opened «Cooperation» urban health center is set to serve around 20,400 residents. This facility provides a wide range of essential services, including emergency care, maternity services, general medical examinations, nursing treatments, chronic disease monitoring, and maternal, child, and school health programs.

The center is equipped with modern medical technology and an electronic medical record system, ensuring continuous and coordinated patient care. These advancements are designed to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare delivery in the area.

Upgrades to Rural Health Centers

In addition to the new hospital and urban health center, Minister Tahraoui also visited the renovated «Tahat» rural health center in Tarfaya province. The center was upgraded at a cost of 2.6 million dirhams and now serves 894 residents. It has been equipped with new medical devices, nursing staff, and an electronic medical records system to improve efficiency and the quality of care provided.

These upgrades reflect the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure in both urban and rural areas. By investing in modern facilities and training, the Ministry of Health aims to ensure that all citizens have access to high-quality medical services, regardless of their location.

Conclusion

The inauguration of the Tarfaya Regional Hospital and the opening of the «Cooperation» urban health center mark a significant step forward in the development of the healthcare system in the region. These initiatives not only address immediate healthcare needs but also lay the foundation for long-term improvements in public health. With continued investment and strategic planning, the goal of universal health coverage becomes increasingly attainable.
