China Supports Nigeria’s Anti-Terror Efforts, Opposes Foreign Interference

China’s Commitment to Nigeria’s Security and Development

China has reaffirmed its dedication to supporting Nigeria in its ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and maintain internal stability. This commitment was highlighted by the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, who expressed his support in a statement released on Thursday via his official X account. The statement followed a meeting with the National Security Adviser of Nigeria, Nuhu Ribadu.

Dunhai emphasized that China supports the Nigerian government’s developmental plans, which are tailored to fit Nigeria’s national realities. He mentioned the positive outcomes of the cooperation between the two countries since President Tinubu attended the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and made a state visit to China last year.

“Great to meet with Mr. Mallam Nuhu Ribadu @NuhuRibadu, National Security Advisor of Nigeria. Since President Tinubu’s attendance at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and his state visit to China last year, practical cooperation between our two countries across various fields has yielded fruitful outcomes, effectively supporting Nigeria’s socioeconomic development and the improvement of people’s livelihoods,” he wrote.

As a comprehensive strategic partner of Nigeria, China is committed to backing the Nigerian government in guiding its people toward a development path that aligns with the nation’s unique circumstances.

Opposition to Foreign Interference

Dunhai also stressed that China firmly opposes any form of external interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs, especially when it is disguised as concerns for religion or human rights. He stated:

“We oppose any country’s interference in other countries’ internal affairs under the pretext of religion and human rights. We oppose the wanton threat of sanctions and the use of force. China is willing to continue supporting Nigeria in combating terrorism and maintaining domestic stability.”

This statement comes at a time when global attention has been drawn to Nigeria’s security challenges, particularly following threats from U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump has suggested deploying American military forces to Nigeria if the alleged genocide against Christians is not halted.

Global Responses and Nigeria’s Stance

In response to these developments, China reiterated its support for Nigeria during a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday. The spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mao Ning, warned against foreign interference in Nigeria’s domestic issues.

Ning stated that China believes every nation has the right to address its internal matters without external coercion or threats. Nigeria has consistently denied claims of religious persecution or genocide, asserting that its security operations target criminal groups and terrorist networks that threaten national peace and unity.

The government also rejected its inclusion on the U.S. list of countries violating religious freedom, arguing that such a designation is based on “inaccurate data and misrepresentation” of the nation’s security challenges. It clarified that Nigeria faces terrorism, not religious persecution, and that both Christians and Muslims have suffered from extremist violence.

Continued Concerns and Reactions

On Wednesday evening, Trump reiterated his willingness to stop aid and assistance to Nigeria if the alleged persecution of Christians continues unchecked. This has raised concerns among many stakeholders about the potential impact on Nigeria’s economy and security.

Despite these challenges, China remains a steadfast ally to Nigeria, offering continued support in the fight against terrorism and in maintaining domestic stability. The relationship between the two nations continues to evolve, driven by mutual interests and shared goals.
