The Importance of Project Management in Nigeria’s Development
The Chartered Institute of Project Managers of Nigeria (CIPMN) has consistently emphasized its dedication to enhancing the standards of all projects executed within the country. This commitment is particularly highlighted during events such as the International Project Management Day, which serves as a platform to recognize and celebrate the critical role that project managers play in driving economic growth and national development.
During the recent celebration in Abuja, the Registrar General of CIPMN, Mr. Henry Mbadiwe, spoke about the theme for this year’s event: “The Power Trio: Project, Leadership, and Agile.” He explained that this theme underscores the essential relationship between effective project management, visionary leadership, and the adaptability needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
“This theme challenges institutions, project professionals, and policymakers to create synergy between structure and flexibility,” Mbadiwe said. “It ensures that leadership decisions translate into impactful project outcomes.”
The celebration also serves as an opportunity to acknowledge and honor individuals—both men and women—who contribute to the nation’s development through the efficient management of projects. It is a moment for governments, institutions, and professionals worldwide to reflect on how project management contributes to economic growth, national development, and societal well-being.
A Regulatory Body for Project Management
Established by Act No. 3 of 2018 of Gazette No. 15, Vol. 105, the Chartered Institute of Project Managers of Nigeria plays a crucial role as the Federal Government’s regulatory body. Its responsibilities include regulating, certifying, licensing, and supervising the practice of project management across all sectors of the economy.
This means that CIPMN is tasked with ensuring that every project executed in Nigeria, whether public or private, meets national and international standards of quality, transparency, and sustainability. By doing so, the institute aims to ensure that project execution delivers real value to the people of Nigeria.
The Role of Project Management in Success
Mbadiwe emphasized that behind every successful development initiative lies a well-managed project. Whether it involves infrastructure, education, healthcare, or technology, each successful outcome is driven by a project team that operates with structure, strategy, and discipline.
At CIPMN, the belief is that the strength of project management systems will be key to achieving development in Nigeria. The institute fosters professionalism, ethical standards, and institutional accountability at all levels.
Call to Action for Stakeholders
Mbadiwe called on citizens, public institutions, and private organizations to recognize the indispensable role that project management plays in national development. He pointed out that projects are not just about structures and buildings; they also have the power to change lives, improve service delivery, and build lasting systems.
Among the best practices for public institutions, he highlighted the need to establish project management offices, provide training and certification, and ensure that all officers involved in project execution are licensed under CIPMN standards.
Collaborative Efforts for Better Outcomes
CIPMN collaborates with Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to set up project management offices. This collaboration ensures close and continuous oversight and quality assurance. Such efforts are vital in addressing challenges that have hindered Nigeria’s infrastructural progress, such as delays, cost overruns, and substandard delivery.
Through continued efforts, the institute aims to make project management not only professional in Nigeria but also competitive on a global scale. This will be achieved through competence, accountability, and a commitment to excellence.
