Cristiano Ronaldo Reveals Why He Missed Diogo Jota’s Funeral

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Absence from Diogo Jota’s Funeral Explained

Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the most iconic footballers in history, has finally spoken about his absence from the funeral of his former teammate Diogo Jota. The event, which took place in Portugal earlier this year, was a somber occasion for the football world, as Jota and his brother Andre Silva lost their lives in a tragic road accident.

The incident occurred on July 3, when Jota and his brother were traveling in a car that crashed in northern Spain. They were en route to board a ferry to Liverpool to prepare for the pre-season. The two brothers were later buried 48 hours after the crash, with many of their teammates and friends in attendance in Gondomar, Portugal.

Jota’s best friend, Ruben Neves, made a special trip from the United States, where he was participating in the FIFA Club World Cup, to be present at the service. However, despite the emotional significance of the event, Ronaldo chose not to attend.

The Reason Behind Ronaldo’s Absence

In an interview with Piers Morgan, Ronaldo opened up about why he did not show up at Jota’s funeral. He explained that he had a personal struggle with visiting cemeteries, stemming from the loss of his own father.

“But one of the things that I don’t do, it’s after my father died; I’ve never been in a cemetery again.”

Ronaldo also mentioned that he wanted to avoid drawing attention away from Jota’s grieving family. He noted that his presence would likely attract media scrutiny, which he felt would overshadow the moment.

“And second, you know my reputation, wherever I go, is a circus. I don’t go because if I go, the attention goes for me, and I don’t want this kind of attention. People can continue to criticise me. I felt good with my decision. I don’t need to be in the first line for people to see me. I’m planning the things, I’m thinking about his family, I don’t need to be in the cameras for the people to see what I do,” he added.

Emotional Impact of Jota’s Death

Ronaldo admitted that he was deeply affected by the news of Jota’s death. He shared that he cried when he received messages about the tragedy.

“I didn’t believe when they sent me messages. I cry a lot. It was a very, very difficult moment for everybody – for the country, for families, for friends, for teammates, devastating.”

Additional Details About the Tragic Accident

In a separate development, it has been reported that doctors had given Jota a warning before the fatal accident. According to sources, medical professionals had advised him not to fly due to a recent lung-related surgery.

The accident occurred when Jota’s Lamborghini veered off the road after a tyre blowout, leading to a fire that claimed the lives of both Jota and his brother. The incident has left the football community in shock and mourning, highlighting the fragility of life and the importance of safety measures.
