Awareness of Fraudulent Activities Targeting ECG Customers
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has issued a warning to its customers, urging them to be vigilant against fraudulent activities carried out by individuals impersonating company officials. These fraudsters are reportedly reaching out to customers under the guise of offering assistance with acquiring electricity meters or resolving meter-related issues.
According to ECG, these scammers often contact customers, claiming that the company has received new meters and ask whether the customers have applied for one or are experiencing difficulties. Following this, they attempt to extract money or personal information from the unsuspecting victims.
Some of these fraudsters have been reported to download images of ECG staff from online platforms to enhance their deception and gain the trust of potential victims. This tactic is being used to manipulate customers into believing they are interacting with legitimate representatives of the company.
In an interview conducted in Accra, Dr Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, General Manager of External Relations at ECG, emphasized that the company has not authorized any individual or agent to contact customers directly regarding meter acquisition. He reiterated that all official processes related to new meters are strictly handled at ECG offices or through verified platforms.
“Customers should not pay any money to anyone who claims they can secure a meter outside our offices. These are clearly fraudulent activities,” he warned.
Dr Ayiku also reminded customers that ECG does not maintain any mobile money accounts. He urged anyone receiving suspicious calls to report them immediately to the nearest ECG office or local police station.
Steps to Protect Yourself from Scams
- Verify the Identity of the Caller: Always confirm the legitimacy of any individual claiming to represent ECG. Do not rely solely on the information provided over the phone.
- Avoid Sharing Personal Information: Never provide sensitive details such as bank account numbers, passwords, or other personal data to unknown callers.
- Do Not Make Payments to Unverified Sources: Any request for payment should be treated with caution. ECG will never ask customers to make payments through unofficial channels.
- Report Suspicious Activity: If you suspect any fraudulent behavior, report it to ECG or local authorities immediately.

How to Recognize a Scam
- Unsolicited Calls: Be cautious if you receive unexpected calls from individuals claiming to be from ECG.
- Urgent Requests: Scammers often create a sense of urgency to pressure customers into making quick decisions.
- Requests for Payment: Any demand for immediate payment without proper verification is a red flag.
- Use of Official Titles: Fraudsters may use titles or names that sound official to gain your trust.
- Lack of Verification: Legitimate ECG representatives will always provide ways to verify their identity.
Additional Tips for Customer Safety
- Check Contact Details: Ensure that any contact information you use is obtained from official ECG sources.
- Use Secure Communication Channels: Avoid sharing sensitive information through unsecured communication methods like text messages or social media.
- Educate Family Members: Share this information with family members, especially those who may be more vulnerable to scams.
- Monitor Your Accounts: Regularly check your bank statements for any unauthorized transactions.
- Stay Alert: Be aware of common scam tactics and remain cautious when dealing with unfamiliar individuals.
By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, customers can protect themselves from falling victim to these fraudulent schemes. ECG continues to work closely with local authorities to ensure the safety and security of its customers.
