Elite US Pilot Training Features Youngest Romanian Instructor

A Young Romanian Pilot Makes History as T-38 Instructor

At just 24 years old, Claudiu Fusaru has become the youngest T-38 instructor in the 469th Squadron of the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT) program. This prestigious training initiative, which has been active since 1981, is one of the most advanced international programs for preparing fighter pilots within NATO. It brings together 14 NATO nations and equips the best aviators with the skills needed to operate in high-stakes environments.

Fusaru’s achievement marks a significant milestone, as he is the first Romanian pilot to meet all the criteria required to remain an instructor immediately after completing his training. This designation, known as First Assignment Instructor Pilot (FAIP), was proposed by the program’s steering committee and approved by the Chief of Staff of the Air Force. His selection highlights not only his technical expertise but also his leadership potential.

The ENJJPT program is renowned for its rigorous curriculum, which includes training on advanced aircraft and real-world scenarios. The squadron consists of pilots from various countries, each bringing their own experience, language, and cultural background. Despite these differences, the shared goal of mastering flight operations unites them under a common purpose.

A Rising Star in Aviation

Fusaru currently serves as a flight instructor at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he trains future pilots in the fundamentals of flying the T-38 Talon. His journey began in Tulnici, Vrancea County, where he developed a passion for aviation. He later attended the ‘Henri Coandă’ Air Force Academy in Brașov, where he received formal training and laid the foundation for his career.

Between 2019 and 2023, Fusaru flew several aircraft, including the IAK-52, Cessna 172, and IAR-99. In 2023, he was selected to join the ENJJPT program, with the ultimate goal of transitioning to the F-16 Fighting Falcon. This next step will further expand his capabilities and prepare him for more complex missions.

A Global Perspective on Aviation

Fusaru expressed his gratitude for being part of such a diverse and accomplished team. “In a squadron made up of numerous international pilots, with thousands of flight hours, experience in operational theaters, and on various 4th- and 5th-generation aircraft, the youngest instructor is a representative of the Romanian Air Force,” the institution noted in a Facebook post.

He emphasized the importance of learning from experienced pilots who have served in both peacetime and conflict zones. “In the squadron, we are instructors from 14 countries, with different languages, cultures, religions, and customs, but when it comes to flying, we all speak the same language,” Fusaru said.

This sentiment reflects the collaborative spirit of the ENJJPT program, which fosters cross-cultural understanding while maintaining the highest standards of aviation excellence.

Future Prospects

As Fusaru continues his training, his story serves as an inspiration to young aviators across Romania and beyond. His success demonstrates that age is not a barrier to achieving great things in the field of aviation. With his dedication, talent, and determination, he is well on his way to becoming a key figure in the global aviation community.
