FIFA has made a controversial decision by appointing a South African officiating team to oversee the first leg of Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup playoff against Gabon. This move has drawn sharp criticism from Nigerian fans and officials, who question the neutrality of the selection.
According to a letter from FIFA dated November 3, 2025, Tom Abongile will serve as the center referee for the match. He will be supported by his compatriots Zakhele Siwela and Akhona Makalima, who will handle the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) duties. The referee assessor for the game, scheduled to take place on November 13 at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat, will come from the Benin Republic.
A senior official from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) expressed confusion over FIFA’s choice, pointing out the tense relationship between Nigeria and South Africa in football. The official reportedly stated that the NFF was “baffled” by the appointment, citing the strained ties between the two nations.
The controversy was further fueled by comments from a South African sports minister, who had previously expressed a desire for Nigeria not to qualify for the World Cup. This sentiment has raised concerns among Nigerian supporters that the appointment of South African officials may influence the outcome of the match in favor of Gabon.

“Even the Ref Assessor is from Benin Republic. CAF should rethink this fast,” he added, urging the NFF to formally protest the appointments.
