Chief Justice of Nigeria Urges Code of Conduct Tribunal to Uphold Independence and Integrity
Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has issued a strong message to the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) during a recent meeting in Abuja. She emphasized the importance of maintaining the Tribunal’s independence and avoiding any actions that could damage its reputation.
The meeting took place on Thursday when members of the CCT, led by its chairman, Mr Mainasara Umar, visited the CJN’s office for a courtesy call. During the session, the CCT Chairman expressed his desire to strengthen the Tribunal’s operations and ensure it fulfills its constitutional mandate effectively.
Mr Umar highlighted the current state of the facilities at the Tribunal, which he described as inadequate. However, he mentioned that steps have been taken to address these issues. He also called on the judiciary’s leadership to provide the necessary resources to enable the Tribunal to function efficiently.
In response, the CJN encouraged the CCT to adopt innovative strategies to overcome the challenges it faces. She reminded the Tribunal members of their constitutional responsibilities and urged them to focus strictly on the jurisdiction outlined in the 1999 Constitution as amended. Additionally, she suggested that the Tribunal should brainstorm to find solutions for the backlog of cases currently pending before it.
Justice Kekere-Ekun also advised the CCT and the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) to take proactive measures, such as sending reminders to public institutions and agencies to submit their declarations before the deadline. This, she believed, would enhance compliance and improve the overall effectiveness of the Tribunal.
The CJN reminded the Tribunal members of their oath of office and stressed the importance of upholding the law without bias, favor, or personal interest. In a statement released by the Special Assistant on Media to the CJN, Mr Tobi Soniyi, the CJN emphasized that the credibility of the Tribunal and the entire judicial system depends on the integrity and impartiality of its adjudicators.
“Remember always that the credibility of the Tribunal, and indeed the entire judicial system, rests on the integrity and impartiality of its adjudicators. Let your actions inspire confidence in the institution you now lead,” the CJN said.
Focus on Capacity Building and Training
In addition to addressing operational challenges, the CJN reminded the CCT Chairman of the availability of the National Judicial Institute (NJI) to support the Tribunal in organizing training programs. These initiatives, including seminars and workshops, would help improve the skills of Tribunal members and supporting staff.
The CJN also encouraged the Tribunal to leverage these training opportunities to enhance its capacity and efficiency.
