Houston Embraces NYPD After Mamdani’s Victory Leaves Cops Disappointed

New York’s Mayoral Election Sparks Concerns Among Police Unions

Following the election of Zohran Mamdani as the next mayor of New York City, a significant reaction has emerged from police unions across the United States. The Houston Police Officers’ Union seized the opportunity to address potential concerns among NYPD officers, particularly those who might be uneasy about Mamdani’s progressive policies.

The union shared an image of a New York police officer packing for a move, with the iconic skyline of the Big Apple in the background. Accompanying the post was a direct invitation: “NYPD, are you disgusted with the election of Zohran Mamdani?” They then encouraged officers to consider joining the Houston Police Department, stating, “JOIN US! The Houston Police Department is hiring police officers.”

Mamdani, at just 34 years old, became the youngest individual elected to lead New York City. During his campaign, he expressed regret for past comments regarding law enforcement, including labeling the NYPD as “racist and anti-queer.” However, his anti-cop reputation had already gained national attention prior to the election, prompting police groups to urge voters to choose someone else.

Joe Gamaldi, vice president of the Fraternal Order of Police, criticized Mamdani’s proposed policies, stating:

  • Defund/dismantle the NYPD
  • Legalize prostitution
  • Legalize all drug possession
  • Close all the jails

Gamaldi warned that these policies have historically led to “death, destruction, and chaos” in urban communities, urging New Yorkers to vote wisely.

While it remains uncertain whether there will be a mass exodus of NYPD officers, the Houston police union is hopeful that any officers ready to leave New York will consider relocating to Texas. The union highlighted several advantages of working in Houston, including:

  • A supportive mayor and city council, with a police contract passed unanimously
  • Leadership by a “cop’s chief” who is a retired Texas Ranger, not a politician
  • Affordable housing, supportive citizens, affordable insurance, and a fair district attorney
  • Competitive pay with a 36.5 percent pay raise approved over five years

The Bayou City is led by a mayor who identifies as an “old-school Democrat” and is known for being pro-cop.

Mamdani has attempted to distance himself from previous statements made in 2020, when he referred to the NYPD as a “rogue agency” and called for reduced funding. He now claims he will ask the NYPD commissioner to remain in their position. However, the actual Houston Police Department clarified that it is not associated with the recruitment efforts by the union, adding, “HPD is always hiring.”

Impact on the Mayoral Race and Future Policies

As Mamdani prepares to take office, questions remain about how his shift from defunding the NYPD to supporting police will affect his mayoral race. His historic win has raised concerns about whether New York City is on the verge of electing its most radical mayor yet.

Additionally, there are discussions about how his victory could bring major changes to the city’s fire department and the future of Robert Tucker. Mamdani’s campaign has also faced scrutiny due to past statements that labeled the NYPD as “racist,” which continue to haunt his political journey.

His rise to power has also attracted support from lefty celebrities and progressive icons, who see him as a historic figure—New York’s first Muslim mayor. This support highlights the broader implications of his election and the potential for transformative change in the city.
