New Gombe forges key alliances with leading Malaysian universities

Expanding Horizons: North-Eastern University forges New Academic Alliances

North-Eastern University (NEU), located in Gombe, has taken a significant step forward in its international academic journey by signing two major collaboration agreements with two of Asia’s top institutions: the University of Malaya (UM) and the University of Technology Malaysia (UTM). These partnerships mark a pivotal moment for NEU as it continues to expand its global footprint and enhance its academic offerings.

The agreements were formalized during an official visit to Malaysia led by Dr. Sani Jauro, Founder and Pro-Chancellor of NEU, along with Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Sani Isyaka. The collaboration aims to foster deeper ties in academic, research, and technological fields between NEU and the Malaysian universities.

A Vision for Global Excellence

Dr. Jauro described the partnerships as a major step toward NEU’s vision of becoming a “nexus for development.” By combining academic excellence, innovation, and international collaboration, the university seeks to produce globally competitive graduates who can contribute meaningfully to the world.

One of the most exciting aspects of this partnership is the establishment of a student exchange programme. This initiative will allow NEU students to study in Malaysia, experiencing world-class academic environments and gaining international exposure. Through this programme, students will have access to advanced research and teaching facilities, while also building valuable global networks.

The exchange will operate on a semester-based model, enabling qualified students to earn transferable academic credits while participating in cultural immersion programmes. This not only enhances their educational experience but also prepares them for a more interconnected world.

Fostering Staff Exchange and Research Collaboration

In addition to student exchanges, the agreements also facilitate staff exchange and joint research initiatives. This framework allows lecturers and researchers from NEU and their Malaysian counterparts to co-teach, conduct seminars, and jointly supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research.

These collaborative efforts include working together on international grant applications, co-authoring publications, and participating in shared technological and innovation-driven projects. Such initiatives are expected to significantly strengthen NEU’s academic foundation and elevate its global standing by improving research visibility and institutional rankings.

A Shared Commitment to Global Growth

Officials from UM and UTM have praised NEU’s commitment to global education and research partnerships. They emphasized that cross-border collaboration remains essential for modern innovation and development. Dr. Jauro expressed optimism that these agreements would serve as a “bridge between Africa and Asia,” promoting mutual respect, shared learning, and sustainable development.

Strengthening International Ties

With the new partnerships, NEU joins the ranks of Nigerian universities with multiple international linkages. The institution already maintains academic collaborations with the University of Surrey (UK), Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (UK), Misr University of Science and Technology (Egypt), Pharos University (Egypt), and the Tiger Eye Foundation (Ghana).

According to NEU, these collaborations reaffirm its dedication to building a globally competitive learning environment rooted in innovation, ethics, and excellence.
