High-Level Meeting Between Sri Lankan Prime Minister and Vatican Representative
On Monday, November 3, a significant diplomatic meeting took place between the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Secretary for the Holy See’s Relations with States and International Organisations. The meeting was held at Temple Trees, the official residence of the Prime Minister.
During the discussion, several key topics were addressed, including education, reconciliation, and international relations. The Prime Minister provided an overview of the recent education reforms that have been introduced as part of the Government’s policy framework. These reforms were received positively by Archbishop Gallagher, who expressed appreciation for the efforts being made to improve the educational landscape in Sri Lanka.
Archbishop Gallagher also spoke about the Holy See’s global initiative known as the Jubilee of World Education. He emphasized the importance of education, stating that “education is the new name for peace, hope, and community development.” This sentiment resonated with the Prime Minister, who acknowledged the role of education in fostering national progress and social harmony.
Focus on Reconciliation and Justice
The conversation then shifted to post-conflict reconciliation. The Prime Minister highlighted the Government’s commitment to an inclusive and pluralistic approach, stressing that reconciliation requires continuous dialogue, patience, and renewed thinking. Archbishop Gallagher commended the Government’s vision and reiterated the significance of strengthening the justice system, trust, and transparency. He noted that these elements are crucial in maintaining international confidence and ensuring long-term stability in the country.
Potential Papal Visit and Future Collaboration
As the meeting drew to a close, Archbishop Gallagher proposed that Pope Leo XIV consider an official visit to Sri Lanka. The Prime Minister welcomed this suggestion and expressed her readiness to extend a formal invitation. She also accepted the Archbishop’s invitation to visit the Holy See, indicating a desire to deepen bilateral ties between Sri Lanka and the Vatican.
The Vatican delegation included Rev. Monsignor Roberto Lucchini, Charge d’Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of the Holy See in Colombo, and Rev. Monsignor Tomislav Zubac, Second Secretary of the Secretariat of State of the Holy See. On the Sri Lankan side, the meeting was attended by several high-ranking officials, including:
