NPP 2026 Primaries: Ghana Police Secures Exclusive Security Control

NPP Announces Security Arrangements for Upcoming Presidential Primaries

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially announced the security arrangements for its upcoming presidential primaries, which are scheduled to take place on Saturday, January 31, 2026. The decision was made by the NPP Presidential Elections Committee, which has emphasized that the Ghana Police Service will have exclusive responsibility for all security operations during the event.

This announcement was made during a press conference held at the party’s headquarters in Accra on Thursday. Joseph Osei-Owusu, the Chairman of the Committee, highlighted the importance of maintaining order and ensuring a smooth electoral process. He stated that no private or unauthorized security groups would be allowed at any voting center, reinforcing the need for strict adherence to the party’s guidelines.

Osei-Owusu, who is also a former First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, explained that access to voting areas would be strictly controlled. “All other individuals will be required to remain outside designated security perimeters,” he said. This measure aims to prevent any disruptions and ensure that the primary elections proceed without interference.

According to the committee, only specific individuals will be permitted within the voting zones. These include delegates, accredited agents of the presidential aspirants, and officials from the Electoral Commission (EC). Osei-Owusu urged all stakeholders to follow the operational guidelines to ensure the smooth conduct of the primaries.

The Electoral Commission will play a central role in overseeing the elections. This includes the printing, distribution, and monitoring of ballot papers, as well as enforcing the operational rules. The EC’s involvement is expected to add an additional layer of credibility to the process.

Osei-Owusu, who previously served as a Member of Parliament for Bekwai, reiterated the committee’s commitment to delivering free, fair, transparent, and credible elections. He emphasized that the outcome of the primaries should accurately reflect the will of the party delegates.

Candidates Contesting for the NPP Presidential Nomination

The upcoming primaries will feature five candidates vying for the sole slot to become the NPP’s presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections. Each of the aspirants brings a unique background and experience to the race:

  • Ken Ohene Agyapong: Former MP for Assin Central.
  • Dr Bryan Acheampong: Former MP for Abetifi Constituency.
  • Dr Mahamudu Bawumia: Former Vice President and NPP presidential candidate in the 2024 general election.
  • Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum: Former Minister for Education and former MP for Bosomtwe Constituency.
  • Kwabena Agyei-Agyepong: Former General Secretary for the NPP and former Press Secretary for former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

These candidates represent a diverse range of political and administrative experiences, and their contest is expected to be highly competitive.

Importance of Secure and Transparent Elections

With the upcoming primaries being a critical step in determining the NPP’s future direction, the emphasis on security and transparency is essential. The involvement of the Ghana Police Service ensures that the process remains under official control, reducing the risk of external interference or disruptions.

The committee’s approach reflects a broader commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring that the party’s internal processes are conducted with integrity. By limiting access to voting centers and involving the Electoral Commission, the NPP is taking proactive steps to maintain public confidence in the electoral process.

As the date for the primaries approaches, all parties involved will need to work together to ensure that the event is carried out smoothly and efficiently. The success of these primaries will not only determine the next presidential candidate but also set a precedent for future internal party elections.
