Addressing the Crisis of Road Accidents in Ghana
Road accidents have become a growing concern across Ghana, with increasing numbers of incidents reported each year. According to recent findings, the primary cause of these accidents is not superstition or unexplained phenomena, but rather over-speeding. This alarming trend has been highlighted by the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), which is calling for stricter adherence to speed limits to prevent avoidable tragedies.
Mr. Bismarck Elorm Sacketey, the Assistant Planning Manager of the NRSA – Ho, has emphasized that many drivers continue to disregard the prescribed speed limits, contributing to a sharp rise in road crashes. He pointed out that while some people attribute these incidents to supernatural causes, the reality is far simpler: over-speeding is the main culprit.
Understanding Speed Limits and Their Importance
Sacketey explained that every road and town in Ghana has an approved speed limit, designed to ensure safety for all road users. These limits range from 30 km/h in densely populated areas to 100 km/h on motorways. Exceeding these limits is considered over-speeding, which can lead to dangerous situations on the roads.
“These limits exist for a reason,” he said. “Once they are ignored, danger follows.”
Recent statistics provided by the NRSA indicate that 60 percent of road crashes are caused by over-speeding. This trend is described as “a very worrying phenomenon, yet very common.” The higher speeds increase the likelihood of collisions and make the impact of crashes more severe when they occur.
The Consequences of Over-Speeding
In addition to increasing the risk of collisions, over-speeding also reduces a driver’s ability to brake effectively in emergency situations. Sacketey explained that at high speeds, a driver attempting to avoid a pedestrian, animal, or obstacle may find the vehicle unresponsive, leading to serious casualties and property damage.
He added that the consequences of over-speeding often extend beyond injuries and fatalities. Damage to vehicles, shops, roadside structures, and other public infrastructure is also common.
“It is not only lives we lose; properties and livelihoods are destroyed too,” he said.
A Call for Responsible Driving
To address this issue, Sacketey urged drivers to be more cautious, disciplined, and considerate on the road. He stressed that compliance with speed regulations is one of the most effective ways to reduce accident rates.
“Let us all be thoughtful when driving. Adhering to the appropriate speed limits will help curb this menace and save lives,” he advised.

To encourage safer driving habits, the NRSA recommends the following:

- Drivers should avoid distractions such as using mobile phones while driving.
- Public awareness campaigns should be conducted to educate road users about the dangers of over-speeding.
By taking these steps, drivers can contribute to a safer road environment for everyone. It is crucial that individuals, authorities, and communities work together to address the issue of over-speeding and reduce the number of road accidents in Ghana.
