Officials launch investigation into security funding from 2020 to present

Investigation into Security Intervention Funds Begins in Nigeria

The House of Representatives has launched an investigation into the disbursement of security intervention funds by former President Muhammadu Buhari and current President Bola Tinubu from 2020 to the present. This move marks a significant step in addressing concerns about the management of resources allocated for national security.

At the inaugural session of the investigative hearing in Abuja, Hon. Zakaria Nyampa, Chairman of the Ad-hoc Committee on the Expenditure of All Intervention Funds on Security, emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and fiscal discipline in managing these funds. He stated that the investigation aims to ensure that every naira allocated for security serves its intended purpose of safeguarding lives and property.

The Need for the Investigation

Nyampa explained that the need for this investigation arises from the growing disparity between the substantial budgetary allocations to the security sector and the ongoing insecurity across the country. He clarified that the inquiry is not a “witch-hunt” but a constitutional responsibility of the Parliament to ensure that public funds are used effectively.

The investigation will cover all intervention heads, special allocations, and procurement processes carried out by beneficiary agencies. It will also assess the impact of such spending on security outcomes throughout Nigeria. “We are determined to follow the money with diligence, objectivity, and patriotism,” Nyampa added.

Collaboration with Key Stakeholders

To ensure credibility and openness, the Ad-hoc Committee will work closely with several key institutions. These include the Ministry of Finance, the Budget Office of the Federation, the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Ministry of Defence, and the Nigeria Police Force. Additionally, the committee will engage with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and civil society watchdogs such as BudgIT, the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), and SERAP.

Consequences of Mismanagement

Nyampa warned that mismanaging funds meant for security has serious consequences for national stability. He highlighted that when money intended to secure the nation is diverted, the cost extends beyond financial loss—it impacts human lives. “We owe it to Nigerians to get this right,” he said.

He assured that the committee’s report would contribute to strengthening security governance and restoring public trust in the management of these critical funds.

Commitment to Accountability

Earlier, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen reaffirmed the House of Representatives’ commitment to accountability, probity, and the effective utilization of all security intervention funds in Nigeria. Represented by the Deputy Chief Whip, Hon. Ibrahim Isiaka, the Speaker emphasized that the creation of the Ad-hoc Committee reflects the House’s unwavering commitment to accountability in matters of national security.

Tajudeen urged members of the Committee to uphold the core values of the House—accountability, effectiveness, and fairness. He commended Hon. Nyampa for taking the lead in this important assignment with integrity and encouraged the Committee to carry out its work effectively.

Conclusion

This investigation represents a crucial effort to address concerns about the allocation and use of security funds in Nigeria. By working with various stakeholders and maintaining a focus on transparency and accountability, the Ad-hoc Committee aims to ensure that public resources are used to enhance national security and protect the lives of citizens.
