Oyo closes welfare gap for industrial workers

Oyo State Government Reinforces Commitment to Workers’ Welfare

The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its dedication to the well-being of workers through a series of industry-friendly policies aimed at fostering a positive and productive work environment. This commitment was highlighted during a recent sensitisation visit to two major companies in the state—Nigerian Breweries and the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC), commonly known as Coca-Cola.

The visit was led by the Commissioner for Investment, Trade, Cooperatives and Industry, Adebisi Adeniyi, who emphasized the importance of maintaining good relations between employers and employees. The initiative was part of a routine exercise conducted by the Industrial Crisis Management Committee, established by Governor Seyi Makinde to ensure that workers’ welfare remains a top priority.

Key Objectives of the Sensitisation Visit

During the visit, the committee focused on several critical areas, including:

  • Welfare and Safety Concerns: Ensuring that both permanent and contract workers are treated fairly and have access to safe working conditions.
  • Maintaining Peace: Promoting harmony between management and labor unions to prevent disputes and foster collaboration.
  • Bridging Disparities: Addressing differences in welfare packages between permanent and contract staff to create a more equitable workplace.

The Commissioner for Investment, represented by the Director of Industry, Mrs Majeedat Olanrewaju, led the delegation. She noted that Governor Makinde had specifically instructed the committee to maintain a strong relationship between employers and their workforce. This includes ensuring that all workers, regardless of their employment status, receive fair treatment and adequate support.

Recommendations from the Committee

During the visit, the committee made several recommendations to improve working conditions at the companies. One key suggestion was for the Nigerian Bottling Company to expand its restaurant facilities to provide a healthier and more hygienic dining environment for employees.

At the Nigerian Breweries, the Brewery Manager, Seun Akinwale, and the Corporate Affairs Manager, Danjuma John-Ekele, expressed the company’s commitment to worker safety and welfare. They highlighted that the company prioritizes the well-being of its employees, offering competitive remuneration and comprehensive welfare packages to both permanent and outsourced staff.

Positive Feedback from Labor Unions

The union leaders at both organizations welcomed the government’s efforts. Festus Olubiyo, Union Chairman at Nigerian Breweries, and Lanbe Lukman of NBC, praised the existing collaborative relationship between their members and the companies. They expressed confidence that continued dialogue would lead to even better outcomes for workers.

The visit included an inspection of various facilities, such as the restaurants, changing rooms, production lines, and restroom sections. These inspections were aimed at assessing the overall working environment and identifying areas for improvement.

Company Responses

In separate statements, the Corporate Affairs Manager, Mrs Ifeoma Okoye, and the Plant Manager at NBC, Mr Andrew Barnabas, reiterated the company’s willingness to cooperate with the government. They emphasized their readiness to comply with government policies that promote trade and enhance workers’ welfare.

Conclusion

The sensitisation visit underscored the Oyo State Government’s ongoing efforts to support workers across different industries. By engaging directly with business leaders and labor unions, the government aims to create a balanced and sustainable work environment that benefits all stakeholders.
