Arrest of a Notorious Electricity Transformer Vandal
The Kwara State Police Command has successfully arrested a notorious electricity transformer vandal, Samson Ayodele, following his apprehension while attempting to steal components from a power installation that supplies electricity to Koro Town in the Ekiti Local Government Area. This arrest was confirmed through a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi.
Ayodele, a 36-year-old man from Skyway Road, Egbe, Kogi State, was taken into custody by operatives of the Eruku Police Division around 5:50 p.m. on November 3, 2025. The operation was based on credible intelligence after local residents raised concerns about suspicious activity near a transformer that had been targeted multiple times in recent months.
Ejire-Adeyemi stated, “The suspect was caught red-handed vandalising the transformer that supplies electricity to the community.” During the investigation, law enforcement recovered several items from Ayodele, including:
- Three copper wire bars
- A fuse
- Two connection wire bars
- Two wooden covers
- Two aluminium wires
- Several bolts and nuts
- A bag of tools
- A digital scale
During interrogation, Ayodele reportedly confessed to the crime. He also admitted to having previously been arrested, charged, and imprisoned in Kogi State for a similar offence. However, he returned to the illegal trade after his release.
Police Commendation and Warning
The Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, praised the vigilance of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) staff and the swift response of the Eruku Division officers. He issued a strong warning against acts of vandalism that disrupt essential public services.
“Acts of vandalism that cripple essential services will never be tolerated in Kwara State. The Command will continue to work hand-in-hand with communities and service providers to identify and apprehend offenders wherever they operate,” Ojo said.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements around electrical installations or other critical national assets to the nearest police station.
Rising Concerns Over Vandalism
PUNCH Metro reports that transformer and streetlight cable vandalism has become a recurring issue in parts of Ilorin and its surrounding areas. This has often resulted in prolonged darkness, disrupting business activities and affecting daily life.
Security experts have linked this trend to rising unemployment and the growing black-market trade in stolen copper and aluminium components. These materials have become highly lucrative in the scrap-metal industry.
Legal Proceedings
The police have assured that Ayodele will face legal consequences once the investigations are concluded. His case is expected to go before the court, where he will be charged for his actions.
This arrest highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat crimes that threaten public infrastructure and services. It also underscores the need for continued community involvement and cooperation in maintaining safety and security in the region.
