The Secret to Swimmers’ Happiness in Riyadh

Uganda’s Swimmers Tackle New Events at Islamic Solidarity Games

Ugandan swimmers are making waves at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, by stepping outside their usual specialties and competing in new events. This marks a significant shift for the athletes, who are using the opportunity to test their versatility and push their limits.

Among the swimmers, Jesse Ssengonzi and Tara Naluwoza Kisawuzi, who typically compete in the 50m and 100m butterfly, have added the 50m and 100m freestyle to their repertoire. Gloria Muzito, known for her performances in the 50m and 100m freestyle, has also expanded her schedule by including the 200m freestyle. Meanwhile, Tendo Mukalazi, who usually competes in the 50m and 100m freestyle, is trying out the 50m backstroke and breaststroke. This bold move highlights the team’s willingness to experiment and grow as athletes.

The Islamic Solidarity Games hold special significance for Ugandan swimming, as it was here that Kirabo Namutebi won the country’s first and only international swimming medal—silver in the women’s 50m freestyle at the 2022 edition in Konya, Turkey. Although Namutebi is not part of the squad this time, her brother Tendo Mukalazi is representing Uganda alongside Muzito, Ssengonzi, and Kisawuzi. The team is aiming to make the semifinals and finals in the events they’ve entered.

A Strategic Approach to Competition

Coach Tonnie Kasujja emphasized the importance of the team’s approach during the Games. “We are trying a few different things to keep happy but also focused,” he said from the Games Village in Riyadh. “The athletes have been encouraged to try out something different to challenge the status quo. However, we are also excited that they took on the challenge and we expect that the performances will be really good,” he added.

This strategy reflects a broader effort to develop the swimmers’ skills and adaptability. By participating in events they don’t usually compete in, the athletes are not only broadening their experience but also gaining valuable insights into their strengths and areas for improvement.

The competition schedule includes a mix of events that showcase the swimmers’ diverse talents:

The swimmers are not only representing Uganda but also setting the stage for future success in international swimming. Their efforts reflect a commitment to excellence and a desire to inspire the next generation of athletes.
