The Role of University Administrators in Shaping Student Experiences
Professor Justice Nyigmah Bawole, the former Dean of the University of Ghana Business School, has emphasized the importance of university administrators taking on a more active and compassionate role in shaping student experiences. He urged them to move beyond their traditional administrative duties and become “architects of student experiences.” This call to action came during his keynote address at the 2025 University of Ghana Registrar’s Management Seminar, held at the Cedi Conference Centre.
The seminar, titled “Transformational Leadership: Inspiring Vision and Driving Change in Higher Education,” served as a key platform for senior administrative and professional staff to discuss emerging trends in higher education. It highlighted the urgent need for a more humane and efficient university system that prioritizes student well-being and success.
A Personal Story of Impact
During his speech, Professor Bawole shared a compelling story about a former student he helped. The student had lost his results, but with Professor Bawole’s assistance, they were eventually retrieved. This allowed the student to obtain his transcript, gain admission to an international institution, and ultimately secure his “dream job.” This example illustrated how administrative actions can have a profound and lasting impact on a student’s life.
He also spoke about another instance where he intervened in the life of a young female student who had faced a personal crisis. Her father collapsed and died in her arms, and she was later found to be pregnant. “That’s one of our jobs as administrators, to look out for her, to be able to track her, to be able to mentor, to say a few words and to encourage her,” he said.
From Control to Support
Professor Bawole stressed the need for a shift in administrative practices—from rigid control to a system of support and mentorship. He argued that this transformation is essential for creating a positive learning environment. He called for a collective effort across the university, emphasizing that the ability of leaders to connect with students directly impacts their overall experience.
This approach not only fosters a sense of community but also helps students navigate challenges they may face both inside and outside the classroom. By being attentive and proactive, administrators can play a crucial role in ensuring that students feel supported and valued.
Building Confidence and Innovation
The professor also highlighted the importance of inspiring teaching and administrative clarity. He noted that these elements are vital in assuring access to a great future for young people. He emphasized that systems within universities should not stifle innovation or discourage creativity. Instead, they should foster confidence in the institution and its mission.
Professor Bawole praised the University of Ghana for its commitment to transforming individuals. He pointed out that students who enter with poor academic records often end up achieving brilliant academic performances due to the opportunities provided by the institution. This reflects the potential for growth and development when students are given the right support and resources.
A Call to Action
In conclusion, Professor Bawole’s message was clear: university administrators must take on a more active and empathetic role in supporting students. By shifting from a purely administrative function to one of mentorship and care, they can significantly enhance the student experience. This transformation requires a collective effort, strong leadership, and a deep commitment to the well-being of every student.
As the university continues to evolve, it is essential that administrators embrace their role as architects of student experiences, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to succeed and thrive.
