New Archbishop of St John’s Faith Mission Passes Away
The newly appointed archbishop of the St John’s Faith Mission, Julius Hoveka, has passed away after a brief illness in Windhoek on Wednesday. His death marks a significant moment for the church and its followers across Namibia.
Hoveka took over from Archbishop Petrus Shionbo, the founder of the church, who passed away in 2023. The transition of leadership came at a crucial time for the congregation, as Hoveka was seen as a key figure in maintaining the spiritual direction of the mission.
In an interview with Desert FM on Thursday, church spokesperson Uazenga Ngahahe confirmed the news of Hoveka’s passing. He described Hoveka as a “fearful man of God” whose leadership brought unity among congregations in Namibia and the Kavango region.
“It’s difficult for the church to cope without the archbishop. He was our spiritual father, counsellor, and guide. He prayed for those who were suffering and provided direction to the congregation,” Ngahahe said.
Hoveka began his ministry at the age of 12 under the mentorship of Shionbo. He was known for his dedication and selfless service to both the church and the wider community. His work helped grow the St John’s Faith Mission, which originated in the Epukiro constituency (now Omawe Wadenganda), where he and Shionbo started the ministry with only a small group of members.
Although his tenure as archbishop was short, lasting from September 7 until his death, Hoveka left a lasting impact on the church. Ngahahe highlighted his vision, commitment to the congregation, and faithfulness in teaching the Word of God.
“He was a man of vision, committed to his congregation, and faithful in teaching the Word of God. His prayers, guidance, and activism during the liberation struggle remain part of his legacy,” he said.
Looking ahead, the church plans to continue honoring the legacies of both Shionbo and Hoveka while ensuring a smooth transition of leadership. Ngahahe pointed out the symbolic significance of the timeline between the ordination of Hoveka and the death of Shionbo, noting that the 783 days represented a spiritual transition.
“Peace, love, and faith in the Word of God remain our guiding principles. The Lord is our shepherd, and even in this difficult time, we trust in His guidance,” he said.

Hoveka’s contributions to the church extended beyond his role as an archbishop. He was deeply involved in community development and social justice, often advocating for the marginalized and supporting initiatives that promoted education and healthcare.
