Cubs: Triumph, Tragedy, and Legacy in Doha

A Historic Night for Ugandan Football

The Aspire Zone in Doha was buzzing with excitement on Wednesday night, as the Uganda Cubs made their debut at the FIFA U-17 World Cup. This was a momentous occasion for the nation, marking their first appearance at this prestigious level of football. The stands were filled with passionate Ugandan fans, who outnumbered the Canadian supporters, creating an electric atmosphere that set the stage for history to be made.

For Uganda, the match was not just about the result but about making a statement on the global stage. In the 25th minute, James Bogere etched his name into Ugandan football history by scoring the country’s first-ever goal at the FIFA U-17 World Cup. Known as “Mr. Dribbler,” Bogere showcased incredible skill and composure as he weaved through Canada’s defense and found the back of the net. His goal was a testament to the potential of Ugandan football and the spirit of the team.

“We made history twice — our first World Cup goal in our first appearance,” Bogere said after the match. “The fans gave us energy. Even if the result didn’t go our way, their support kept us going.”

Canada, though stunned by the early goal, quickly regrouped and showed resilience in the second half. They increased their intensity and created several chances, testing the African newcomers. Bogere had another opportunity, but it was denied by the woodwork and the strong defense from Canada. The game remained tight until the 88th minute when Elijah Roche, who had previously made a crucial tackle on Bogere, scored to equalize the match.

However, the heartbreak came moments later as Uganda conceded a penalty in stoppage time. Marius Aiyenero converted it with calm precision, sealing a 2-1 victory for Canada. Despite the loss, both teams acknowledged the significance of the match. Canada coach Mike Vitulano praised Uganda, saying, “Credit to Uganda. Their debut was unbelievable. For our boys, this first win at the U-17 World Cup is special.”

Uganda coach Brian Ssenyondo remained proud of his team’s performance. “The boys fought with heart,” he said. “We didn’t manage the closing moments well, but we lost honourably. We ask our fans to come back for the next match — they lift the players.”

With the match against Canada behind them, the Uganda Cubs now turn their attention to their next opponents.
