EFCC Returns ₦42.5 Million to Widow After Fraud
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully returned a bank draft of ₦42,500,000 to Mrs. Margret Taye Odofin, a 70-year-old widow and retiree who was defrauded by her former account and investment officer, Mrs. Kehinde Olawale Yusuf, an employee of a new generation bank.
The symbolic handover took place on Thursday at the Kaduna Zonal Directorate of the Commission, where the EFCC’s Acting Director, Bawa Kaltungo, presented the recovered funds on behalf of the Executive Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede.
Odofin had, in a petition to the EFCC in December 2024, alleged that Yusuf deceived her into investing in a supposed Ponzi scheme between November and December 2020, promising quarterly returns of ₦1.7 million.
Unknown to the widow, the banker had allegedly diverted ₦47 million from her account into multiple bank accounts without authorisation. Following her inquiries, Yusuf reportedly fled to the United Kingdom, cutting off all communication with the victim.
Despite her escape abroad, EFCC operatives were able to trace and recover ₦42.5 million from the fraudulent transactions, which has now been formally returned to the rightful owner.
An emotional Odofin expressed profound gratitude to the EFCC and its leadership for restoring her faith and hope.
“I cannot believe this because when we reported the case in the United Kingdom, they told us the offence was committed in Nigeria and advised us to contact the EFCC.
“Today, God has used the Commission to wipe away my tears. I have waited for years to get my hard-earned money back,” she said.
“I thank Mr. Ola Olukoyede for the excellent job he is doing. I will campaign for the EFCC anywhere because today they have given me every reason to believe the Commission is truly working.”
Speaking during the handover, Kaltungo reaffirmed the EFCC’s commitment to justice and victim restitution under Olukoyede’s leadership.
“We sincerely appreciate your trust in the Commission to recover your money. We are happy to have proven our professionalism and capacity to resolve fraudulent activities within our mandate,” he said.
The EFCC reiterated that it remains steadfast in its mission to protect citizens from financial crimes and ensure that offenders are held accountable, regardless of their location.
The Impact of the EFCC’s Actions
The successful recovery of these funds highlights the EFCC’s growing effectiveness in combating financial crimes and providing justice to victims. This case is a testament to the agency’s dedication to ensuring that those who commit fraud face the consequences of their actions, no matter where they flee.
