Temporary Road Closure for Emergency Maintenance
The Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT) has announced that a section of the Mbarara-Ishaka road will be temporarily closed on Friday, November 7, for emergency maintenance. This closure is aimed at addressing critical issues on the highway, which serves as a vital link between several districts in southwestern Uganda and neighboring countries.
The affected stretch of the road runs between Km 3+500 at Ruharo and Km 3+900 near the Buffalo Restaurant roundabout. The specific location for the maintenance work is at Km 3+700, close to Woodland Gardens. The maintenance activities are scheduled to take place from 9:00 a.m. to midnight on the specified date.
Guidance for Drivers
To minimize disruptions, drivers of heavy trucks and buses have been advised to use the Mbarara bypass via Coca-Cola and Ruti roundabouts. Light vehicles, on the other hand, are recommended to take the Ntare-Kyamugurani road to reconnect with the main highway. These alternative routes are expected to help manage traffic flow during the closure period.
Background and Public Concerns
The decision to carry out emergency maintenance comes after years of public complaints about the deteriorated condition of the road. The Mbarara-Ishaka road is a major artery connecting several districts in southwestern Uganda, including Bushenyi, Sheema, Kasese, Mbarara, Ntungamo, and Rukungiri. It also plays a crucial role in regional trade, linking Uganda with Rwanda, Tanzania, and South Sudan.
In May 2025, a civic group called Make Bushenyi Great Again (MBGA) submitted a petition threatening to block the highway if repairs were not initiated. This highlighted the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate action to ensure the safety and efficiency of the road.
Official Statement from the Ministry
Permanent Secretary Bageya Waiswa, in a public statement, emphasized the importance of the maintenance works and urged road users to exercise patience. “We regret any inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation as our teams carry out emergency maintenance. These works are necessary to ensure the safety and efficiency of one of Uganda’s most important highways,” Waiswa said.
The Ministry has assured residents and travelers that the current maintenance efforts are part of broader rehabilitation plans aimed at addressing long-standing safety concerns on the highway. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and supporting economic development in the region.
Ongoing Efforts for Infrastructure Development
The temporary closure underscores the ongoing efforts by the MoWT to maintain and upgrade key transportation routes across Uganda. As the country continues to grow and develop, the need for reliable and safe infrastructure becomes increasingly important. The Mbarara-Ishaka road is a critical component of this infrastructure, and its maintenance is essential for facilitating trade, travel, and economic activity.
