China’s Reunification: An Unstoppable Historical Trend
The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Yu Dunhai, has highlighted the importance of Nigeria’s long-standing support for the One-China Principle, calling it a fundamental element of the strong bilateral relationship between the two nations. He emphasized that China’s reunification is an inevitable historical development and a shared goal among all Chinese people, including those in Taiwan.
Speaking in Abuja during the commemoration of October 25 as the day marking Taiwan’s restoration, Ambassador Yu expressed his views on the significance of this event. He stated that the decision by China’s national legislature to recognize this day was warmly received by people across both sides of the Taiwan Strait. This recognition, he explained, reflects the unwavering commitment of the Chinese people to uphold the One-China Principle and protect national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
A Defining Moment in Chinese History
Ambassador Yu recalled the historical moment when Taiwan was returned to China after Japan’s surrender in 1945. He described the ceremony held in Taipei, where the Chinese government officially proclaimed the return of Taiwan and the Penghu Islands to China’s territory. This marked the beginning of Taiwan’s reintegration under Chinese sovereignty.
He stressed that the restoration of Taiwan to the motherland is a historical fact enshrined in the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation. These documents, he noted, must not be distorted or denied. The ambassador also referenced the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 from 1971, which restored China’s rightful place at the UN and recognized the People’s Republic of China as the sole legitimate representative of the entire country.
Criticism of Misinformation and Foreign Interference
Yu criticized the actions of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in Taiwan and their external allies, accusing them of deliberately distorting the One-China Principle. He warned that such efforts are “absurd and dangerous attempts to turn back the wheel of history.” He made it clear that no foreign interference with the One-China Principle will be tolerated, and no individual or force can succeed in interfering with China’s internal affairs.
Strengthening Sino-Nigerian Relations
The ambassador expressed gratitude for Nigeria’s consistent and principled support since diplomatic relations were established in 1971. He pointed out that cooperation between the two countries has reached new heights. During President Tinubu’s state visit to China last year, Nigeria reaffirmed its firm stance against any form of “Taiwan independence” or interference in China’s internal affairs.
Over the past year, China-Nigeria relations have experienced rapid development, yielding significant benefits for both nations. Ambassador Yu concluded by reaffirming China’s determination to achieve full reunification and national rejuvenation.
A Shared Aspiration
“The reunification of China is the aspiration of the people and an irresistible historical trend,” he declared. “It is a cause that will surely be realized with the joint efforts of all Chinese people.”
