Exclusive: Ex-Senator Ohuabunwa Named PDP Factional BoT Chairman

Leadership Changes in the PDP

Former Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, who represented the Abia North Senatorial District, has taken on a significant role as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This development came after the dissolution of the previous BoT led by Adolphus Wabara. The change was orchestrated by a faction loyal to the party’s new Acting National Chairman, Alhaji Abdulrahman Muhammad.

The announcement was made through a communique issued on Friday following an inaugural and emergency meeting of the newly reconstituted BoT held in Abuja. The document outlined several key changes within the party’s leadership structure.

New Appointments and Reasons for Change

According to the communique, the new BoT elected Isah Dansidi as Secretary, replacing Senator Ahmed Makarfi. The decision to make these changes was based on the positions that Wabara and Makarfi had publicly taken during the ongoing intra-party crisis. The BoT stated that such actions undermined the neutrality and moral authority expected of the Board of Trustees.

“Accordingly, the Board unanimously approved the election of Senator Mao Ohuabunwa and Hon. Isah Dansidi as the Chairman and Secretary of the newly constituted Board of Trustees, respectively,” the communique read.

The BoT also reaffirmed its commitment to the PDP as “one indivisible, united, and democratic family firmly committed to the ideals of justice, equity, and progress.”

Postponement of the National Convention

Regarding the party’s proposed national convention, the BoT expressed support for its postponement. This decision was made pending the outcome of an appeal filed against a Federal High Court judgment. The BoT emphasized the importance of respecting judicial processes.

“The judgment of the Federal High Court remains superior and weightier in law than the interim order of the Oyo State High Court.Prudence and respect for judicial processes demand that the proposed National Convention be postponed until the Court of Appeal delivers its decision,” the communique read.

Implications for the Party

The leadership changes within the PDP reflect a strategic move to stabilize the party during a period of internal conflict. By appointing Mao Ohuabunwa and Isah Dansidi, the BoT aims to restore unity and ensure that the party remains focused on its core values.

The decision to postpone the national convention highlights the importance of legal procedures and the need for the party to act with caution. This approach is seen as a way to avoid further divisions and maintain the integrity of the party’s operations.

Future Steps

As the PDP navigates this period of transition, it will be crucial for the new leadership to address the concerns of all party members. The BoT’s emphasis on unity and democracy sets the tone for future actions. The party must work together to ensure that it continues to represent the interests of its constituents effectively.

More updates are expected as the situation develops. The next steps will likely involve further discussions and decisions that will shape the future direction of the PDP.
