A Call for Urgent Action to Secure the Release of an Abducted Medical Professional
The Nigerian Medical Association, Federal Capital Territory (NMA-FCT), has raised its voice in a strong appeal to security agencies to intensify their efforts in securing the release of Chinonye Nwachukwu, a young medical graduate who has been held captive for over two weeks. This urgent call came during a news conference held on Friday in Abuja, where the association’s leadership expressed deep concern over the situation.
Emeka Ayogu, the Chairman of NMA-FCT, emphasized that Nwachukwu was abducted on October 21 while traveling to Garki Hospital in Abuja, where she is employed. According to Ayogu, the abductors demanded a ransom and issued warnings against any interference from law enforcement agencies. The matter has since been reported to various security bodies, including the Department of State Services, FCT Command, the FCT Police Command, and the Minister of the FCT.
Ayogu highlighted that the family of Nwachukwu has not been allowed to communicate with her, and her current condition remains unknown. He stressed the importance of ensuring her safety and urged the security agencies to step up their search efforts. The association also warned that it may consider further actions if the situation is not resolved soon.
Concerns from Association Leadership
Abdullahi Nasiru, the Vice Chairman of NMA-FCT, echoed these concerns, calling for immediate intervention by the authorities. He mentioned that doctors across the FCT are anxious about the safety of their colleague and urged members to remain calm. Dr Uchenna Aniebue, the Treasurer of the association, added that the incident has caused significant concern among medical professionals in the region. She called on the authorities to continue their efforts to ensure the safe return of Nwachukwu.
The Nigeria Dental Association, FCT Chapter, also joined the chorus of support. The Chairman, Theophilus Agho, appealed to the abductors to release Nwachukwu, emphasizing that she returned home after studying abroad to serve her country. He commended the ongoing efforts of the security agencies and urged them to maintain the momentum in their search.
Continued Calls for Focus and Action
AbdulHafeez Usman, the Assistant Secretary of NMA-FCT, reiterated the need for security agencies to remain focused on rescuing the victim safely. His statement reflects the growing urgency within the medical community to see Nwachukwu released unharmed.
As the search continues, the medical community in the FCT remains united in its plea for the swift and safe return of Chinonye Nwachukwu. The situation highlights the critical need for coordinated and effective action from all relevant authorities to ensure the safety of individuals in such vulnerable circumstances.
